The biometric card and the NNI

Every Mauritanian enrolled in the national biometric population register has a national identification number (NNI), and the identity card (carte d'identification) is compulsory from 16. The current card, set out in Decree 2021-138, is polycarbonate with a chip readable by contact and contactless readers and a machine-readable zone; it is valid for ten years and is applied for at a citizens' centre. Cards issued under the 2012 decree remain valid until they expire.

Enrolment began in May 2011 and required documents, sometimes going back to parents and siblings, that many Haratin and Afro-Mauritanians could not produce, and the process drew protests. If your file holds an enrolment extract, a receipt or a refusal rather than a card, we translate that document as it is.

Three languages on the card

The field labels are printed in Arabic, French and English: NNI, first name, father's first name, family name, sex, date and place of birth. Anything printed only in Arabic, such as an entry or the issuing authority, is translated. See our Arabic page.

Because the card separates first name, father's first name and family name, it is the best guide to filling in US forms. The translation keeps that order and follows the spelling of your passport.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Does a card with English labels need translating?

Only the parts that are not in English. We translate the Arabic entries and stamps and certify the whole card.

My card is the older 2012 type.

It stays valid until its expiry date and is translated the same way.

What is the father's first name field?

Mauritanian records name each person with their own first name, their father's first name and a family name. All three are kept.
