A court judgment, not a registry form

Only a court can end a civil marriage in Guinea, usually the tribunal de première instance for the area. The proof of divorce is the judgment itself (jugement de divorce), and foreign authorities such as the Dutch government ask for an official copy from the court that granted it rather than a summary.

The divorce provisions of the 2019 Civil Code cover divorce by mutual consent as well as contested divorce, and introduced a prestation compensatoire, a lump sum one spouse may be ordered to pay the other. The judgment sets out custody (garde), maintenance (pension alimentaire) and any such payment, and we translate each order exactly.

What happens after the judgment

Once the judgment is final, the divorce is normally noted in the margin of the marriage record. If you have the marriage extract with that marginal note, or a certificate that no appeal was lodged, send them too: each is translated with its own date, so the date of the hearing and the date the divorce became final stay distinct.

A separation pronounced only before an imam or the family leaves no court record. See our Guinean legal separation page, our marriage certificate page and our French page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

The judgment is several pages long. Do I need all of it?

A certified translation must be complete, so if you submit the judgment we translate every page, including the stamps and signatures of the court clerk.

Our divorce was religious only.

It produces no court document. Ask the receiving office what evidence it accepts; we translate whatever you have.

Is prestation compensatoire the same as alimony?

It is a lump sum set by the judge. We translate the term literally and keep the French in brackets, without equating it to a US concept.
