A judgment of the tribunal de paix
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo a divorce is a court decision, not a registry form. It is pronounced by the tribunal de paix, and the Family Code allows a single ground: the irremediable destruction of the conjugal union (destruction irrémédiable de l'union conjugale). The judge must first try to reconcile the spouses, so the judgment usually recites the conciliation hearings before it reaches the decision.
What you hold is therefore a jugement of several pages: the parties, the facts each side put forward, the court's reasoning, and the orders on custody, maintenance and property. We translate all of it, including the case number (RC followed by digits), the court's seal and the clerk's certification on the copy.
Proving the marriage really ended
Because divorce is a judicial act, an agreement between the two families, however formal, is not a divorce document, and USCIS or a state court will want the judgment. If your file also contains a certificate that no appeal was lodged (certificat de non-appel) or a later civil registry entry recording the divorce, translate it too: it shows the decision is final.
The DRC is not a party to the Apostille Convention; documents for use abroad are legalised through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and USCIS does not require either. See the Congolese marriage certificate page and our French page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a divorce certificate separate from the judgment?
The judgment is the core document. If you also have a non-appeal certificate or a registry entry, send those as well and we translate them with it.
Our divorce was settled between the families.
Under Congolese law a divorce is pronounced by a court. We can translate a family agreement as supporting evidence, but ask the receiving office what it will accept.
Do you translate the judge's reasoning or only the decision?
Everything. A certified translation must be complete, so the reasoning, the orders and the stamps are all included.
