A civil registration, not a ceremony

A Kazakh marriage certificate (свидетельство о заключении брака) is issued by the civil registry office (RAGS, the successor of the Soviet ZAGS) that registered the marriage. Repeat copies are issued through Public Service Centres or as electronic certificates from egov.kz with a QR code. The certificate gives both spouses' names before and after the marriage, their dates and places of birth, and the number and date of the registry entry (актовая запись), which we copy exactly.

Only the registered marriage has legal effect in Kazakhstan. A religious ceremony (neke qiyu) performed by an imam does not, so a mosque certificate is not a substitute for the civil one; if both are in your file we translate both and label each for what it is. Certificates issued before 1991 are Soviet forms in Russian and remain valid. See our Kazakh page and our Russian page.

Surnames before and after

The certificate records the surname each spouse took. A Russian-form surname has a feminine ending (Akhmetov, Akhmetova) and a Kazakh form without -ov has none, so a husband and wife who share a surname can still have it printed in two forms. The translation transliterates each name as printed and follows the spelling in each spouse's passport.

For a spousal petition USCIS also looks at how earlier marriages ended, so a previous divorce certificate or a former spouse's death certificate is often needed alongside this one. USCIS does not require an apostille; for a court or state agency that does, the Ministry of Justice apostilles civil registry documents.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

We had a religious ceremony and a registry marriage.

Only the registry certificate is the legal marriage. We can translate both and say which is which.

Our certificate came from eGov and has a QR code instead of a stamp.

Electronic certificates are valid Kazakh documents. We translate them in full, verification details included.

My wife's surname ends in -ova and mine in -ov.

That is the same surname in its feminine and masculine forms. We translate each exactly as printed.
