The medical certificate and the registry certificate
A death in Kazakhstan is registered by the civil registry on the basis of a medical certificate of death (медицинское свидетельство о смерти) issued by the attending doctor or a forensic medical examiner. The registry then issues the death certificate (свидетельство о смерти), with a registry entry number; repeat copies come through Public Service Centres or egov.kz. A family file may contain both, and they are different documents.
In the US a Kazakh death certificate usually proves that a prior marriage ended, supports a survivor's claim, or opens an estate. Where an insurer or court needs the cause of death, check which of your documents states it and translate that one. See also the Kazakh marriage certificate page.
Soviet forms and renamed places
Deaths registered before 1991 are recorded on Soviet forms in Russian, with the name in Russian form (surname in -ov, patronymic in -ovich or -ovna). Relatives' later documents may use Kazakh forms, so the same family name can appear two ways in one file. We translate each document as written.
Many places have been renamed: Alma-Ata is Almaty, Semipalatinsk is Semey, Guryev is Atyrau, and the capital has been Akmola, Astana, Nur-Sultan and Astana again. We translate the place name as printed and can add today's name in a translator's note. See our Russian page and our Kazakh page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
The certificate says the death occurred in Alma-Ata.
That was Almaty's Soviet name. We keep it as printed and can note the current name.
I have a medical certificate and a registry certificate.
They are different documents. Most offices want the registry certificate; we translate either or both.
Does USCIS need an apostille on it?
No. A court or state agency might; ask the office before ordering one.
