There is no civil marriage in Israel
Israel has no civil marriage. A marriage performed in Israel is performed by a religious authority: Jews through the Rabbinate, Muslims in a sharia court, Christians in their own churches. The Ministry of Interior then registers the marriage. A marriage performed abroad is recognised and registered the same way.
So "the Israeli marriage certificate" is not one document. It may be a rabbinate certificate, a sharia court document, a church record, or the Interior Ministry's registration of a foreign marriage. Ask the office which it wants — see our Israeli birth certificate page.
The ketubah is in Aramaic
A Jewish marriage also produces a ketubah, the marriage contract, and it is written largely in Aramaic rather than Hebrew — a different language in the same script, in a formulaic legal register that has barely changed in centuries. A translator who reads Hebrew does not automatically read it.
Hebrew documents often carry the Hebrew calendar date alongside the Gregorian one, and the Hebrew year does not line up with the Gregorian; each is converted individually and both shown. See our Hebrew page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
