The Cuban schedule uses Cuban-made vaccines
Cuba manufactures much of its own vaccine supply, and a Cuban immunisation card records domestically produced products — the Heberpenta pentavalent and others — under names a US reader will not recognise.
We give the product name exactly as recorded and the antigens it covers where the product states them. Whether a given product satisfies a US immunisation requirement is for the civil surgeon to assess, and we do not characterise it.
BCG, and a high-coverage programme
Cuba gives BCG at birth and operates a long-standing compulsory programme with very high recorded coverage, so a Cuban card is usually complete and dense.
The card is stamped by the policlínico that gave each dose. It is what an I-693 needs, and it is a small folded card people leave out of a scan.
The historia clínica at the policlínico
Cuban primary care runs through the policlínico and the family doctor, who holds the historia clínica. Hospitals issue a discharge summary (resumen de historia clínica) rather than the chart.
Obtaining records from Cuba after emigration is frequently difficult, and where a client can only get a summary we translate that, named for what it is.
The carné de identidad, and legalisation
The carné de identidad number is eleven digits built from the date of birth plus a serial, so it encodes the birth date on its face and does not change. It appears on Cuban medical documents.
Cuba is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so documents for use in the United States go through consular legalisation, and those stamps are translated with the rest. See our Cuban birth certificate page.
