Youngstown State University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
Youngstown State University asks for an official English translation of graduate transcripts not in English, and for official translations with complete course descriptions before it grants credit for courses taken abroad; neither rule says who must translate. Youngstown State University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Undergraduate admission itself rests on an official course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, and graduate applicants need one too, which we do not provide.
NACES first
Undergraduate admission runs on an official course-by-course evaluation.
Official translations
Asked for foreign transfer credit and graduate transcripts.
Word format
Course descriptions in English, as a Word document.
YSU requirements at a glance
| What YSU asks for | |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate admission | An official course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member for every secondary school, college and university attended; the catalog says only official evaluations are accepted for admission (catalog, first-year page). |
| Evaluators | Undergraduate pages name TEC, IEE and Scholaro (source). The graduate page names Scholaro, WES, IEE and TEC and rejects Validential Evaluations and Foreign Consultants (source). |
| Translation, transfer credit | Foreign credits are evaluated on official transcripts, official translations and complete course descriptions or syllabi (catalog). Course descriptions go in English, in a Word document (transfer page). |
| Translation, graduate | An official English translation of any transcript not in English, plus a certified copy of the degree certificate (source). |
| Who may translate | Not stated on either page. The graduate page notes that TEC also offers professional translation (source). |
| Scans | Not accepted for admission, except resumes, statements of purpose, passports and income documents, unless the international admissions staff ask for them (source). |
| Deadlines | Undergraduate priority: June 1 (fall), November 1 (spring) (catalog). Graduate, international: April 15 (fall), October 1 (spring); some programs earlier (source). |
| Residents with foreign records | Domestic first-year applicants who attended high school abroad also need an international transcript evaluation (catalog). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. YSU's catalog evaluates foreign credit on "official transcripts, official translations and complete course descriptions" (international undergraduate admission), and its graduate page asks for an official English translation of transcripts not in English (international graduate admissions); neither restricts who translates, and a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Admission is decided on the evaluation, not the translation
For international undergraduates, YSU does not read your foreign transcripts directly. It requires an official credential evaluation for every secondary school, college and university you attended, including subjects studied, and its catalog says that only official evaluations are accepted for admission; the evaluating company then sends YSU official copies of your transcript (catalog). The international office lists TEC, IEE and Scholaro, with a discount through its links (first-year page). If you have fewer than 12 semester hours of college work, the evaluation must cover all your high schools, with subjects, grades and a key to the grading system (source).
Applicants from Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand and Ghana are asked to contact the international office for special instructions before applying (source). Evaluation agencies set their own rules for documents in other languages; see translation for credential evaluation.
Transfer credit: translations and course descriptions
The translation becomes YSU's own requirement once you ask for credit. The catalog evaluates credits from institutions abroad on official transcripts, official translations and complete course descriptions or syllabi (catalog). The credit transfer process starts only after you are admitted and your official college transcripts arrive in sealed envelopes from the school; an International Programs Office staff member then emails you to request course descriptions for each course (credit transfer guide).
YSU asks for those descriptions in English, in Word format (source). Its credit transfer guide warns that curricula vary by major, so some credits may not transfer into yours (source).
Graduate applicants: translation plus evaluation
The international graduate page asks for an official English translation of any transcript not in English and a certified copy of your degree certificate, and separately for a NACES course-by-course evaluation with a copy of the evaluated transcripts attached to the report (source). A WES report counts as an ICAP evaluation; Validential Evaluations and Foreign Consultants are not accepted. The graduate catalog repeats the evaluation rule (source).
Official credentials are mailed to Graduate Studies at 1 Tressel Way. The catalog asks international applicants to have all materials in at least four months before the semester (catalog).
Where YSU's pages differ
The international office pages call TEC, IEE and Scholaro YSU's "approved evaluators" (first-year page), the undergraduate catalog calls the evaluators it links "preferred" (catalog), and the graduate page adds WES (graduate page). We have not resolved that difference. If you want to use an evaluator not on the undergraduate list, ask intadm@ysu.edu first.
Documents applicants usually translate
- University transcripts, for transfer credit or graduate admission
- The degree certificate, of which graduate applicants send a certified copy
- Course descriptions or syllabi for each course you want credited
- Secondary school transcripts and diploma, when your evaluator asks for a translation
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to YSU
Graduate applicants upload supplemental items in the graduate application portal and mail official credentials to Graduate Studies (source).
Undergraduate transfer students send course descriptions when the International Programs Office requests them, after admission, as an English Word document (source, credit transfer guide).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For YSU that means we translate transcripts, degree certificates and course descriptions; the NACES course-by-course evaluation that undergraduate and graduate admission requires comes from an evaluation agency such as TEC, IEE or Scholaro.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a translation or an evaluation to be admitted to YSU as an undergraduate?
An evaluation. YSU requires an official NACES course-by-course evaluation of every school you attended and accepts only official evaluations for admission (source).
What does YSU need to give me credit for courses I took abroad?
Official transcripts, official translations and complete course descriptions or syllabi (source). The course descriptions go in English, as a Word document (source).
Who can translate my transcripts for YSU?
YSU's pages ask for an official translation without saying who must make it (catalog, graduate page). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation.
Which evaluation companies does YSU accept?
Undergraduate pages name TEC, IEE and Scholaro (FAQ). For graduate applicants, Scholaro, WES, IEE and TEC; Validential Evaluations and Foreign Consultants are not accepted (source).
Can I upload scans of my transcripts?
Not for admission. YSU accepts scans only of resumes, statements of purpose, passports and income documents, unless the international admissions staff request another document in that format (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
