Notre Dame requirements in detail
Translation (graduate)
Required for transcripts in any language other than English, by a certified translator and/or agency (Graduate School: application requirements).
What to upload
The translated transcript in addition to the original-language transcript and the other required materials, for degree and non-degree applicants (Graduate School: application requirements).
Unofficial vs official
Unofficial transcripts are uploaded; transcripts received by mail or electronically are discarded. An official transcript, including one showing a conferred bachelor's degree, is required only if you accept an offer (Graduate School: application requirements).
MFA in Art
An original-language transcript and an unofficial (notarized) English translation of each, attached in the online application (Department of Art, Art History & Design: MFA admissions).
Undergraduate (international)
An official transcript or record of secondary achievement, including national exam results, through the Common App or Coalition Application; no translation rule published (Undergraduate admissions: international application information).
Transfer applicants
Official college transcripts from a college official, plus a syllabus for every course on your transcripts uploaded in the applicant status portal (Undergraduate admissions: transfer application instructions).
Undergraduate deadlines
Restrictive Early Action November 1, Regular Decision January 4; transfers: spring October 1, fall March 15 (first-year, transfer).
Graduate School: who translates, and what you upload
Notre Dame's Graduate School is explicit about the translator: a transcript not in English must be translated into English by a certified translator and/or agency, and you upload that translation in the online application in addition to the original-language transcript (Graduate School: application requirements). A translation alone, without the original, does not meet the rule.
The Graduate School reviews unofficial uploads only.
It discards any transcript sent to it by mail or electronically during the application, and asks for an official transcript, including at least one showing the conferral of a bachelor's degree, only if you accept an offer of admission (Graduate School: application requirements).
Applicants whose native language or language of college instruction is not English also send official TOEFL or IELTS scores.
Program rules: the MFA asks for notarization
Some departments add their own wording.
The Department of Art, Art History & Design asks MFA applicants to attach an original-language transcript and an unofficial, notarized English translation of each transcript in the online application; an official transcript is required if accepted (Department of Art, Art History & Design: MFA admissions).
Notarization can be added to an eVerbary order at checkout for $34.90 per order.
Check your own program's admissions page before you order: if it is silent, the Graduate School rule (certified translator or agency) applies.
Undergraduate applicants
Notre Dame's undergraduate international pages ask for an official transcript or record of academic achievement in secondary school, including national examination results such as the GCSE, A Levels or the International Baccalaureate, usually sent by your counselor with the Secondary School Report through the Common App or Coalition Application (Undergraduate admissions: international application information).
They do not mention translations; if your school issues records in another language, ask the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at admissions@nd.edu what it needs.
International transfer applicants follow the transfer checklist: official college transcripts sent by a college official through an electronic vendor, by mail or to ndforms@nd.edu, a mid-term grade report, and a syllabus for every course on the transcript, each saved as a PDF named with the course number (Undergraduate admissions: transfer application instructions).
The international transfer page adds English proficiency scores and a passport copy (Undergraduate admissions: international transfers).

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my transcript for the Notre Dame Graduate School?
A certified translator and/or agency (Graduate School: application requirements). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets that rule.
Do I upload only the translation?
No. Notre Dame wants the translated transcript in addition to the original-language transcript (Graduate School: application requirements).
Should I mail my official transcripts when I apply?
No. The Graduate School discards transcripts received by mail or electronically and asks for official ones only if you accept an offer (Graduate School: application requirements).
Does the MFA in Art need a notarized translation?
Yes, its page asks for an unofficial (notarized) English translation of each transcript (Department of Art, Art History & Design: MFA admissions). eVerbary adds notarization for $34.90 per order.
Do I need a credential evaluation for Notre Dame?
Neither the Graduate School requirements nor the undergraduate international pages ask for one (graduate, undergraduate).
