Indiana University Indianapolis: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
IU Indianapolis asks international undergraduate and transfer applicants for their records in the original language plus an English translation by an official translation agency, and says credential evaluations are not necessary. Indiana University Indianapolis accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Its international office's separate translations page and the Luddy School's master's page ask for a translation certified by the issuing school or a public body, which we cannot provide; this page explains where the rules differ.
Translation agency
Undergraduate and transfer pages: an official translation agency.
Original always
A translation alone is never enough for a decision.
No evaluation
Undergraduate records are reviewed without WES or ECE.
IU Indianapolis requirements at a glance
| What IU Indianapolis asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | Records in the original language plus an English translation (undergraduate, transfer). Translations alone are not sufficient for an admission decision (source). |
| Who may translate | An official translation agency (undergraduate, transfer). The international office's translations page names the issuing school, the ministry of education or a U.S. educational advising center instead (source). |
| Evaluation | Not necessary for international undergraduates (source). Luddy master's applicants are encouraged to add WES or ECE (source). |
| Where to upload | Undergraduates: the "Submit Academic Records" form in the Slate portal. Graduate applicants: the same form in Atlas (undergraduate, graduate). |
| Originals | Electronic copies of records from non-US schools serve for the decision; once admitted, you submit official, original records so IU Indianapolis can verify them (source). |
| Graduate transfer credit | Electronic copies are not accepted for transfer credit; official transcripts are (source). |
| Records in English | The international office lists 43 countries that routinely issue many records in English, among them India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Korea and Taiwan (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. The undergraduate records page asks for "an English translation by an official translation agency" (undergraduate records), and the international transfer page says the same (transfer documents), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Where IU Indianapolis's pages differ
IU Indianapolis's admissions page for international undergraduates asks for an English translation "by an official translation agency" (source), and the international office's page for transfer students uses the same words (source). That transfer page links to the office's own page on English translations, which says something different: the accuracy of the translation must be certified by an officer at the issuing school, a government officer at the ministry of education, or a U.S. educational advising center such as EducationUSA (source).
We have not resolved that difference for you. A certified translation from a professional service matches the first wording; it is not a certification by your school or ministry. If your admissions counselor points you to the second rule, ask whether your school or an EducationUSA center can certify the translation, or whether an agency translation is acceptable for your file.
Graduate programs: the school decides, and Luddy asks for more
The central graduate records page asks for electronic copies of records from every post-secondary institution, uploaded in Atlas, and does not mention translations (source). Schools set their own rules. The Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering asks master's applicants to upload an English translation certified by the college that issued the transcript, and encourages a course-by-course evaluation from WES or ECE for degrees from outside the US; it needs official hard-copy transcripts only after admission (Luddy master's).
The international office's step-by-step page also says that any domestic student with international credentials needs an ECE report (application steps). ECE sets its own translation rules.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school transcripts and diploma (also for transfer students with fewer than 26 transferable credits)
- University transcripts, including courses in progress
- Degree certificates
- Exam results issued in another language
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to IU Indianapolis
Upload scans of your original-language records and the English translations to the "Submit Academic Records" form in your Slate portal (undergraduate) or Atlas (graduate). Your school can also mail or send official records directly (undergraduate, graduate).
After admission, you submit the official, original records so IU Indianapolis can verify them (source).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For IU Indianapolis that means we provide an agency translation; we cannot certify it as your school, your ministry of education or an EducationUSA center, and the ECE report comes from ECE.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my records for IU Indianapolis?
The undergraduate and transfer pages ask for an official translation agency (source). The international office's translations page asks for certification by your school, your ministry or a U.S. advising center (source); if in doubt, ask your counselor.
Do I need a WES or ECE evaluation?
Not as an international undergraduate (source). Luddy master's applicants are encouraged to add WES or ECE, and domestic students with international credentials need an ECE report (Luddy, steps).
Can I send only the English translation?
No. Translations alone are not enough; you also submit the original-language records (source).
What does the Luddy School require for translations?
An English translation certified by the college that issued the transcript (source).
When do I send original records?
After admission; electronic copies are used for the decision (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
