University of Louisville: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

The University of Louisville's undergraduate international page says transcripts from schools outside the United States require a notarized, ATA-certified translation, while its 2026-2027 undergraduate and graduate catalogs ask for a notarized, verbatim translation prepared by an appropriate university or government official. UofL accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary when the translator is individually certified by ATA, which eVerbary provides on request; notarization is added for $34.90 per order. Foreign college transcripts also need a course-by-course evaluation from WES, ECE or another NACES member, which we do not provide.

Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. UofL's undergraduate international page asks for a notarized, ATA-certified translation (application requirements); eVerbary provides an individually ATA-certified translator on request and adds notarization for $34.90 per order. The 2026-2027 catalogs name an appropriate university or government official instead (undergraduate catalog, graduate catalog); see "Where UofL's pages differ" below. Where UofL's pages differ

UofL describes the translator four ways. The undergraduate international requirements page asks for a notarized, ATA-certified translation. The 2026-2027 undergraduate catalog and graduate catalog ask for a notarized, verbatim translation prepared by an appropriate university or government official. The transfer credit page asks for a notarized verbatim English translation without naming the translator, and the Graduate School evaluation page asks for a certified translation sent with the original to the evaluator.

We have not resolved these differences. eVerbary is not a university or government official, so we cannot meet the catalog wording; what we can provide is the version on the undergraduate requirements page: a translator individually certified by ATA, with notarization (see the ATA section below). If you want to be sure which wording your office applies, ask the Office of Admissions before you order.

Notarized and ATA-certified: two separate things

The undergraduate page asks for both. ATA certification is a credential of the individual translator; notarization is a notary public confirming the identity of the person who signs the translator's statement. A notarized translation by an uncertified translator does not meet the page, and neither does an ATA-certified translation without the notary.

When you ask for the quote, write that the translation is for UofL and must be ATA-certified and notarized. Notarization is added for $34.90 per order, not per page, so translate all your transcripts in one order. The translation must be verbatim: grades, subjects and the degree name exactly as on the original.

Evaluations: undergraduate and graduate differ

Undergraduate transfer applicants need a course-by-course evaluation of every foreign college transcript; UofL recommends WES or ECE and takes any NACES member (UofL undergraduate international application requirements). The Graduate School works differently: after you pay the application fee, its internal evaluators look at your credentials, and some applicants have the evaluation requirement waived. If they cannot evaluate them, you order a course-by-course report from a NACES or AICE member; The Evaluation Company and IEE have a custom UofL application (UofL Graduate School: international credential evaluation).

Those two agencies set their own translation rules. The Evaluation Company accepts an outside translation only from an ATA-certified translator, or sells its own; IEE wants a word-for-word translation by a certified translator and also sells one. Translate first, then order the evaluation, and send the agency the translation with the original document as the Graduate School asks.

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to UofL

Undergraduate applicants send credentials, with the notarized translation, to adetran@louisville.edu or by mail to the Office of Admissions, Dept. AO, Louisville, KY 40292 (UofL undergraduate international application requirements). For transfer credit review, credentials are mailed directly to the Office of Admissions (UofL: bringing credits to UofL).

Graduate applicants submit official native-language records with the translation (catalog); if an outside evaluation is needed, the translation goes to the evaluation agency with the original document (UofL Graduate School: international credential evaluation).

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian at $34.95 per page, and Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian at $44.95 per page.

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for UofL, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office). We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them. For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UofL that means we do not produce the course-by-course evaluation, and we are not a university or government official, which is what the catalogs name; we provide the ATA-certified, notarized translation the undergraduate page describes.

Frequently asked questions

Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for UofL?

Yes, on request. Ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for UofL and must be made by a translator individually certified by ATA and notarized; we confirm the translator and the price before you pay. ATA certifies translators into English from Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) and from Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page); notarization adds $34.90 per order.

Does the translation for UofL have to be notarized?

Yes. The undergraduate page, both catalogs and the transfer credit page all ask for a notarized translation (requirements, catalog, transfer credit).

Who may translate my transcripts for UofL?

The undergraduate requirements page says an ATA-certified translation (UofL undergraduate international application requirements); the catalogs say an appropriate university or government official (UofL undergraduate catalog 2026-2027: admission). Ask the Office of Admissions if you are unsure which applies to you.

Which evaluation agency should I use for foreign college credit?

UofL recommends WES or ECE and accepts any NACES member for undergraduate transfer (UofL undergraduate international application requirements). The Graduate School accepts NACES or AICE members after its internal review (UofL Graduate School: international credential evaluation).

Can the Graduate School waive the evaluation?

Sometimes. Its internal evaluators review your credentials after the application fee is paid, and some students have the evaluation requirement waived (UofL Graduate School: international credential evaluation).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
