University of North Carolina at Charlotte: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
UNC Charlotte's Graduate School asks for transcripts earned outside the U.S. to be issued in English or translated by a certified translation company, and most graduate applicants need no credential evaluation. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Undergraduate admissions works differently: it does not read foreign transcripts and requires a NACES course-by-course evaluation sent by the agency, which we do not provide.
Translation company
Graduate transcripts: in English or translated by a certified company.
No graduate evaluation
Most master's and doctoral applicants skip the credential evaluation.
NACES for undergraduates
Foreign high school and college records go to an evaluator.
UNC Charlotte requirements at a glance
| What UNC Charlotte asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation, graduate | Transcripts earned outside the U.S. must be issued in English or translated by a certified academic translation company, and are uploaded in the application (source, catalog). |
| Who may translate | A certified translation company, per both the graduate admissions page and the graduate catalog; the alternative is a transcript the school itself issues in English (source). |
| Evaluation, graduate | Not required for three-year or four-year foreign bachelor's degrees, though helpful and strongly encouraged by some programs (source). The Bioinformatics M.S. requires a NACES evaluation, WES preferred (program page). |
| Undergraduate admission | UNC Charlotte does not evaluate foreign high school or college transcripts; first-year and transfer applicants need an official course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, sent by the agency (first-year, transfer). No translation rule is published for undergraduates. |
| Immigration status | The undergraduate evaluation is required regardless of US immigration status, so residents with foreign records need it too (source). |
| Official graduate transcript | Due before pre-registration for the next semester and no later than the end of the first semester: sealed envelope from the school, or eScrip-Safe, National Student Clearinghouse, Parchment or TrueCopy (source). |
| Country rules | India, Bangladesh and Nepal: individual mark sheets combined into one PDF (FAQ). China: transcript in Chinese and English in a sealed envelope, or a CDGDC verified report (source). |
| Deadlines | Graduate priority: March 1 (fall), October 1 (spring), April 1 (summer); final: August 1, December 1, June 1; programs vary (catalog). International transfer documents: July 15 (fall), December 1 (spring) (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. UNC Charlotte's graduate application requirements accept a transcript "translated by a certified academic translation company" (graduate application requirements), and the graduate catalog accepts a translation by an official, certified translation company (graduate catalog); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets that rule. Two offices, two different routes
At UNC Charlotte the route for a foreign record depends on the level you apply to. Undergraduate Admissions does not read foreign transcripts at all: first-year applicants send their official high school records to a NACES member, transfer applicants do the same for college work, and the agency submits a course-by-course evaluation directly to the university (first-year page, transfer page). The office recommends International Education Evaluations, Educational Perspectives, Educational Credential Evaluators or SpanTran, and its IEE partnership gives a discount and free electronic shipment (source). Transfer students with more than 24 transferable US credit hours and no foreign college work are exempt.
The Graduate School does the opposite. It reads your transcripts itself, asks for them in English or translated by a certified academic translation company, and does not require a credential evaluation for most applicants, including holders of three-year degrees such as a BBA or BCA from India (application requirements, international applicants). For graduate applicants the translation is the document the admissions committee reads, so it has to carry every course, mark and credit exactly as the original shows them.
Graduate applicants: upload now, official transcript later
Graduate applications run on unofficial transcripts uploaded to the online application, with the translation attached to each transcript not issued in English (source). The FAQ asks applicants from India, Bangladesh and Nepal to combine the individual marks sheets into one PDF before attaching them (FAQ). After admission, the official transcript showing the bachelor's degree must come straight from the school, in a sealed envelope or through an approved electronic service; emails from school staff are not accepted, and you cannot register for your second semester until it arrives (source).
Some programs add their own rules. The Bioinformatics M.S., for example, requires transcripts from outside the United States to be evaluated by a NACES member, with WES preferred (program page). Check your program page before you apply; evaluation agencies set their own translation rules (see translation for credential evaluation).
Where UNC Charlotte's pages differ
For a transfer applicant with fewer than 24 credit hours who finished high school abroad, the international transfer page asks for an official course-by-course evaluation of the high school record (transfer page), while the undergraduate catalog says transfer students should submit a document evaluation for high school coursework (catalog). The graduate pages also differ in detail: the admissions page mentions individual mark sheets for India only (requirements), and the FAQ extends that to Bangladesh and Nepal (FAQ). We have not resolved either difference; ask Undergraduate Admissions or gradapponline@charlotte.edu before you order an evaluation.
Documents applicants usually translate
- University transcripts and statements of marks, for graduate admission
- Individual semester mark sheets, combined into one PDF for India, Bangladesh and Nepal
- Final or provisional degree certificates
- Secondary school transcripts and diploma, when your evaluation agency asks for a translation
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UNC Charlotte
Graduate applicants upload each unofficial transcript, with its certified translation, in the graduate online application, during or after submitting it (source, FAQ). The official degree transcript comes later, directly from the school.
Undergraduate applicants apply through the Future 49er Portal or the Common Application and send foreign records to the NACES agency, which forwards the evaluation to Undergraduate Admissions (source, deadlines).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UNC Charlotte that means we translate graduate transcripts, mark sheets and degree certificates; the NACES course-by-course evaluation that undergraduate admission requires comes from an agency such as IEE, ECE, Educational Perspectives or SpanTran.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my transcripts for a UNC Charlotte graduate application?
A certified academic translation company, unless your school issues the transcript in English (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets that rule.
Do I need a credential evaluation for a UNC Charlotte master's program?
Usually not. The Graduate School does not require one, even for three-year bachelor's degrees, though some programs strongly encourage it (source). The Bioinformatics M.S. requires a NACES evaluation, WES preferred (source).
Can I send a translated high school transcript for undergraduate admission?
No. Undergraduate Admissions does not evaluate foreign high school transcripts; it needs an official course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, sent by the agency (source).
I am a permanent resident with records from abroad. Do I still need the evaluation?
Yes, for undergraduate admission: the international credit evaluation is required regardless of US immigration status (source).
How do applicants from India submit marks sheets?
Graduate applicants from India, Bangladesh and Nepal combine the individual marks sheets into one PDF and attach it to the application (source). After admission, the statement of marks comes in a sealed envelope from the institution (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
