University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
UNC-Chapel Hill's undergraduate admissions office says every transcript must be in English, and if your school does not issue one in English you must have an official English translation made and send it with the school's official copy; the Graduate School asks for certified English translations of uploaded transcripts. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Credit for courses taken at universities outside the US also needs a WES course-by-course evaluation once you enroll, which we do not provide.
Official translation
Undergraduate rule for any transcript not issued in English.
WES after enrolling
Course-by-course ICAP for credit from non-US universities.
Uploads only
The Graduate School reviews unofficial transcripts plus certified translations.
UNC-Chapel Hill requirements at a glance
| What UNC-Chapel Hill asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation, undergraduate | All transcripts must be in English; if the school does not issue them in English, you have an official English translation made and submit it with the school's official copy (source). International university transcripts of transfer applicants need official English translations too (source). |
| Translation, graduate | Unofficial transcripts uploaded in the original language, with certified English translations when applicable (source). |
| Who may translate | Not stated by either office (undergraduate, graduate). |
| Evaluation | Not needed for undergraduate admission. Enrolling students with coursework from a non-US institution need a WES course-by-course ICAP evaluation for credit (FAQ). Graduate applicants who do not clearly meet the degree guidelines may be asked for a certified credit evaluation (source). |
| How transcripts arrive | Secondary transcripts by secure electronic delivery through services such as Parchment, Scoir, the Common App or National Student Clearinghouse; mail to Heels Hub only if electronic is not feasible (source). |
| Deadlines | First-year Early Action October 15, Regular Decision January 15 (source); international transfer February 15 (source). The Graduate School recommends international applicants finish by December 1 (source). |
| Curriculum | You must complete your country's pre-university curriculum, such as A Levels or the Baccalaureate, before enrolling (FAQ). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. Undergraduate Admissions asks international students to have "an official English translation made" when the school does not issue English transcripts (international students), and the Graduate School asks for certified English translations (application instructions); neither says who must translate, and a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Undergraduate: the translation goes with the application, WES comes later
UNC-Chapel Hill reads foreign secondary and university records itself at the admission stage. Undergraduate Admissions asks for transcripts in English, and for schools that do not issue English transcripts, an official English translation sent along with the school's official copy (source). International transfer applicants send transcripts from every college and university attended, even coursework that earned no credit or that they do not plan to transfer, and those from international universities must have official English translations (source). Send exam results too if your country has them, such as GCSEs (source).
The evaluation is a separate, later step. UNC says a WES evaluation is not required for admission but is required for all enrolling students with coursework outside the US, and asks you to order it as soon as possible after enrolling and finishing that coursework (source). WES is the only evaluator named, and its credit rules page specifies the course-by-course ICAP report (source). WES sets its own rules for documents in other languages; see translation for WES.
Graduate School: unofficial uploads with certified translations
The Graduate School does not accept transcripts mailed or sent electronically with the application; it evaluates only unofficial uploads. Each must be complete, include grades, be issued in the original language and come with certified English translations when applicable, with multi-page transcripts scanned into one file (source). One official transcript per university is required only after an offer, before registration, following instructions in the offer letter.
Foreign degrees are reviewed against published guidelines by country: an honours bachelor's from British-patterned systems, a four-year degree for Latin America and most of Europe and Asia, and for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal a bachelor's in engineering or medicine or a master's in other fields (source). If you do not clearly meet them, you may be asked for a certified credit evaluation showing a US bachelor's equivalent.
Where UNC-Chapel Hill's pages differ
The international students overview says the student must have the official English translation made and submit it in addition to the school's official copy (source). The international first-year and transfer pages instead ask you to have your school send the official transcript, including an official English translation, by secure electronic delivery (first-year, transfer). We have not resolved that difference; if your school will not send a translation with its transcript, ask Undergraduate Admissions how to submit one you obtained yourself.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary and higher secondary school transcripts
- National exam results, such as A Level, Baccalaureate or GCSE certificates
- University transcripts from every institution attended, for transfer applicants
- Graduate applicants' university transcripts and degree certificates
- The final high school transcript requested after you enroll
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UNC-Chapel Hill
Undergraduate applicants apply through the Common Application and have school documents sent by secure electronic delivery; items added after submitting go through MyCarolina, and school officials can email uncsubmit@admissions.unc.edu with your full name and date of birth (source, transcript FAQ).
Graduate applicants upload the original-language transcript and its certified English translation in the online application (source).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UNC-Chapel Hill that means we translate transcripts, exam certificates and degree certificates; the WES course-by-course ICAP evaluation required for credit from non-US universities, and any credit evaluation the Graduate School asks for, come from the evaluator.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my transcripts for UNC-Chapel Hill?
Neither office says. Undergraduate Admissions asks for an official English translation (source), and the Graduate School for certified English translations (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation.
Do I need a WES evaluation to apply as an international transfer?
Not to apply. UNC requires a WES course-by-course ICAP evaluation from all enrolling students with coursework outside the US, ordered soon after enrolling (source).
Can I mail my translated transcripts to the Graduate School?
No. The Graduate School accepts only unofficial uploads for review, in the original language with certified English translations; official transcripts come after admission (source).
I took college courses while still in secondary school. Do I send those transcripts?
Not when applying as a first-year. You report the courses and grades on the application; if you enroll, UNC needs official transcripts before classes start (source).
Is a three-year bachelor's degree enough for graduate admission?
Usually not. The Graduate School expects a four-year degree in most systems (a three-year degree from Québec is listed as enough) and points other three-year degree holders to other admission options (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
