North Carolina State University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
NC State requires an English translation with every official document not issued in English, and its undergraduate admissions office says the translation must come from the issuing institution, the Ministry of Education or a certified translator. North Carolina State University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. First-year applicants need no evaluation agency, but international transfers with college work abroad need a WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation, which we do not provide.
Certified translator
Or the issuing school, or the Ministry of Education.
No agency for first-years
Records are read against your own country's curriculum.
WES or ECE for transfers
Course-by-course, to complete the application.
NC State requirements at a glance
| What NC State asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | Documents not issued in English must be accompanied by an English translation; the first-year checklist lists "official secondary school transcripts and English translations" (source). |
| Who may translate | The issuing institution, the Ministry of Education or a certified translator; the same sentence appears on the first-year and transfer pages. |
| Evaluation, first-year | None named. NC State evaluates your record along the curriculum given in your area, as it would your classmates' (international FAQ). |
| Evaluation, transfer | A WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation for any college coursework outside the U.S. (source). |
| Official delivery | Sent directly by the issuing institution in a sealed envelope (first-year page); the FAQs also allow a counselor upload through Common App or Slate, or a transcript delivery service such as Parchment (international FAQ, FAQ). No fax or email attachments. |
| What you upload | Transcripts you upload to wolfPAW or email yourself count as unofficial (source). |
| Deadlines | International applicants follow the regular dates: first-year Early Action Nov. 1, Regular Decision Jan. 15, spring Oct. 1; transfer fall Feb. 15. Materials are due about two weeks later, and decisions are rolling (source). |
| Graduate School | Unofficial transcripts for review; official ones after the department recommends admission (handbook). The graduate pages we read do not state a translation rule. |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. NC State's international first-year and transfer pages list a certified translator alongside the issuing institution and the Ministry of Education as acceptable sources of the English translation (first-year, transfer), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets the rule. First-year: NC State reads the translation itself
Many large universities send international first-year applicants to an evaluation agency. NC State does not name one for secondary school records: its international FAQ says it evaluates your academic credentials along the curriculum given in your area, the same way it reviews your classmates' records, and the only extra step for international applicants is a visa status survey after admission (source).
That puts the weight on the transcript and its translation. NC State describes an official transcript as one that lists, at minimum, each course you took and a grading system for each course, with a seal, stamp, letterhead or signature (source). The translation has to carry all of that across: every subject, every mark, the grading scale and the stamps. We keep the original course titles next to the English ones and never convert grades.
Transfers: WES or ECE first, syllabi after admission
If you have taken college courses outside the U.S., NC State will not consider your transfer application complete without a course-by-course evaluation from World Education Services or Educational Credential Evaluators, which verify accreditation and give U.S. semester credits and grades for each subject (source). If you have finished less than one year of college, your secondary school transcripts are also required, under the same translation rule. Evaluation agencies set their own translation rules; see translation for credential evaluation.
How many credits transfer is decided only after admission. The department or college that admits you emails you to ask for a syllabus for each course taken abroad, with the university, course number and title, the term, a week-by-week outline of assignments and the textbooks used; you should hear back within 30 business days (source). Upper-division engineering equivalencies are considered only from ABET-accredited institutions. If your syllabi are not in English, plan their translation for the weeks after your offer.
Graduate applicants
The Graduate School asks for legible unofficial transcripts with the application, then requests official transcripts once a department recommends you; the complete official transcripts, with every degree awarded, are due by the last day of classes of your first semester, or a registration hold is placed (source). Programs set their own deadlines, some as early as December for fall (source).
The Graduate School accepts three-year bachelor's degrees only from institutions in the Bologna Process; other three-year degrees need an evaluation from a NACES or AICE member, and if it finds the degree is not equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's, admission is denied (source). The graduate handbook sections we read do not state who may translate; if your program asks, the undergraduate rule above is the university's published standard.
Where NC State's pages differ
On delivery, the first-year page says official documents must come from the issuing institution in a sealed envelope, while the international FAQ also accepts an upload by your counselor through Common App or Slate, and the general FAQ accepts transcript delivery services. On evaluation, the transfer page names WES or ECE, but the general FAQ mentions only WES. We have not resolved either difference; ask the Office of Undergraduate Admissions if you are unsure.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school transcripts for every year, with the grading scale
- The diploma or school-leaving certificate
- University transcripts and degree certificates, for the WES or ECE evaluation
- Course syllabi for credit review after admission
- Bank statements or bank letters for the Certificate of Financial Responsibility
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to NC State
For undergraduates, the official transcript and its translation reach NC State from your school: in a sealed envelope, through your counselor in Common App or Slate, or through a transcript delivery service (source, FAQ). You can upload copies to wolfPAW so your file can move, but those count as unofficial (source).
Admitted transfer students send syllabi as PDFs to the transfer credit coordinator of their college, when the department asks (source). Graduate applicants upload unofficial transcripts in the Graduate School application before submitting it; nothing else should be mailed except official transcripts (source).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For NC State that means we translate transcripts, diplomas, syllabi and bank documents; the WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation for transfer applicants, and any NACES or AICE evaluation the Graduate School asks for, comes from an evaluation agency.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my transcripts for NC State?
The issuing institution, the Ministry of Education or a certified translator (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.
Do I need WES or ECE as an international first-year applicant?
No agency is named for first-year applicants; NC State evaluates your record along the curriculum of your area (source). Transfer applicants with college work abroad need WES or ECE (source).
Can I upload my transcript and translation to wolfPAW?
Yes, but NC State treats anything you upload or email yourself as unofficial (source). The official copy comes from your school, sealed, through your counselor, or through a delivery service.
How do I get credit for courses I took abroad?
After admission, your department asks for a syllabus for each course, with a week-by-week outline and the textbooks used, and answers within 30 business days (source).
Does my bank statement need to be in English?
NC State accepts a bank letter or statement in English certifying the funds, issued within six months of your application (source). A translated statement page is priced like any other page.
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
