UMass Lowell requirements in detail
Translation
All documents in foreign languages must be professionally translated and notarized (International undergraduate application and deadlines).
Who may translate
A professional translator; for transfer course descriptions, a professional agency, notarized by a United States notary public (How to apply as a transfer student).
Notarization
Required on the international page; eVerbary adds notarization at checkout for $34.90 per order.
Evaluation
First-year: none. Transfer: a WES course-by-course evaluation of all international coursework, sent directly from WES (How to apply as a transfer student).
Who sends records
The school or Ministry of Education sends records directly to UMass Lowell (International undergraduate application and deadlines); the catalog asks for copies of the front and back of every document (Undergraduate catalog: admissions policies).
Deadlines (international)
First-year: spring December 1, fall July 25. Transfer: spring January 7, fall July 25 (International undergraduate application and deadlines).
Graduate
International transcripts may need a CED or WES evaluation (International graduate application requirements); the Manning School of Business requires a NACES evaluation (Manning School of Business: graduate admission requirements).
Notarized translations for undergraduates
UMass Lowell adds notarization to the translation rule.
Its international undergraduate page says first-year and transfer applicants must send official secondary records, including leaving-exam results, directly from the school or the Ministry of Education, and that every document in a foreign language must be professionally translated and notarized (International undergraduate application and deadlines).
The undergraduate catalog adds what an acceptable record looks like: original official records with an ink seal and signature, or an exact copy certified by the issuing official or examining board, with copies of both the front and back of every document.
A back page with a grading key or stamp therefore needs translating as well.
Transfer: WES and translated course descriptions
International transfer applicants have every college send official transcripts directly and order a course-by-course evaluation of all international coursework from World Education Services, sent directly from WES to UMass Lowell (How to apply as a transfer student).
WES asks for an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator and does not accept translations made by applicants (WES).
Course descriptions are required for every undergraduate course you want credited.
They must come from the college catalog or website, and those not in English must be translated by a professional agency and notarized by a United States notary public (How to apply as a transfer student).
Departments decide on transfer credit after admissions makes a preliminary evaluation (Undergraduate catalog: admissions policies).
Where UMass Lowell's pages differ
The international undergraduate page asks for translations that are professionally made and notarized, while the undergraduate catalog only says documents not in English must come with official English translations, without mentioning notarization.
We have not resolved that difference for you. A notarized certified translation meets both; you can add notarization at checkout.
Graduate rules vary by college: the international graduate page says transcripts may need a CED or WES evaluation (International graduate application requirements), the Manning School of Business requires a NACES evaluation such as CED, ECE or WES (Manning School of Business: graduate admission requirements), and the Kennedy College of Sciences requires one for the MS in Biological Sciences and the PhD in Applied Biology (Kennedy College of Sciences: graduate admission requirements).

Uploading the translation to UMass Lowell
Apply with the UMass Lowell Application or the Common Application; your school or Ministry of Education sends the records, and the notarized translation accompanies them (International undergraduate application and deadlines).
Transfer applicants also have WES send its evaluation directly and submit translated, notarized course descriptions (How to apply as a transfer student).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For UMass Lowell that means we translate and, if you add it, notarize your records and course descriptions; the WES course-by-course evaluation for transfer applicants comes from WES.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does UMass Lowell require a notarized translation?
Its international undergraduate page does: documents in foreign languages must be professionally translated and notarized (International undergraduate application and deadlines). eVerbary adds notarization at checkout for $34.90 per order.
Which evaluation agency do transfer applicants use?
World Education Services, course-by-course, sent directly to UMass Lowell (How to apply as a transfer student).
Do my course descriptions need to be translated?
Yes, if they are not in English: by a professional agency, notarized by a United States notary public (How to apply as a transfer student).
Do I need to translate the back of my transcript?
UMass Lowell asks for copies of the front and back of all academic documents (Undergraduate catalog: admissions policies), so any text on the back should be translated too.
Do graduate applicants need an evaluation?
It depends on the program: the graduate page says one may be required (International graduate application requirements), and the Manning School of Business requires a NACES evaluation (Manning School of Business: graduate admission requirements).

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
