University of Massachusetts Amherst: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

UMass Amherst asks for a certified translation of transcripts not in English for undergraduate admission, and official English translations of university records for transfer and graduate applicants; its pages do not say who must make them. University of Massachusetts Amherst accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Undergraduate Admissions reads foreign records itself, and the Graduate School takes either an official translation or a NACES course-by-course evaluation, which we do not provide.

University of Massachusetts Amherst: requirements for documents in another language
What UMass Amherst asks for
TranslationUndergraduate: non-English transcripts need a certified translation (FAQ); transfer: official English translations with every university transcript or mark sheet (transfer page).
Who may translateNot stated on the undergraduate or Graduate School pages.
EvaluationNot for undergraduate admission: the International Admissions Office reviews your records (source). Graduate: an official English translation or a NACES course-by-course evaluation (source).
Who sends recordsHigh school transcripts come from your counselor or teacher; university transcripts come directly from the institution, by Parchment, NSC, MY eQuals or mail (first-year, transfer).
Graduate originalsAfter admission, official records go directly from the school or in a sealed envelope signed and stamped across the flap; uploads are not official (source).
DeadlinesFirst-year: November 5 (Early Action), January 15 (Regular); transfer: March 1 for fall (source).
Country rulesA country table on the transcript requirements page: Quebec CEGEP applicants add an English translation of all documents; South Korean transcripts are asked for in Korean and English.
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. The undergraduate FAQ asks for non-English transcripts "with a certified translation" and the transfer page for "official English translations", without restricting who makes them (international FAQ, transfer page); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Undergraduate: UMass reads your records itself

UMass Amherst does not send undergraduate applicants to an evaluation agency. Its International Admissions Office evaluates your high school transcripts and external exams during the review (source), and for transfer applicants it does the credit work too: the FAQ says it does not evaluate transcripts for prospective students outside an application, but admitted students get a preliminary transfer credit evaluation in their admit package (source).

That makes the translation the document UMass actually reads. The country table sets which years it wants: grades 8, 1 and 2 for Brazil, junior and senior middle school for China, grade 10 board results attested by the school for India, and for Quebec an English translation of all documents, including the Diplôme d'Études Secondaires. Every subject, mark and grading note should be in it.

Who sends what

UMass is strict about the sender. High school transcripts must come from your school counselor or teacher; the admissions office will not take transcripts sent by you, your family or an independent consultant (source). Transfer applicants have each university send its transcript directly, electronically or on paper, and applicants from Chinese universities add a CSSD verification report sent by the CSSD Email Service (source).

Graduate applicants upload their documents in the Slate application. After admission, official transcripts must reach the Graduate Student Service Center directly from the school, or in an envelope signed and stamped across the flap by the issuing institution; uploaded or emailed copies are not official (after you apply, admitted students).

Graduate School and University+

The Graduate School accepts an official English translation or an official course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, and names ECE, Educational Perspectives, IEE, TEC (SpanTran) and WES US (source). An evaluation is still needed when you hold a three-year bachelor's degree, which may be accepted if a NACES evaluation finds it equal to a four-year US degree. Isenberg's business analytics master's repeats the same rule (source).

University+, UMass's continuing and online study unit, has a stricter rule of its own: the translation must carry the translator's signature and title, you may not translate your own documents, and a course-by-course evaluation from Scholaro, CED, ECE or WES is also required (source).

Uploading the translation to UMass Amherst

Undergraduates apply on the Common App; high school records come from the counselor and university records directly from each institution (first-year, transfer).

Graduate applicants upload transcripts and translations in Slate for the review, then send officials after admission (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UMass Amherst that means we translate your records; a NACES evaluation, if you choose that route for graduate admission or University+ requires it, comes from an evaluation agency.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my transcripts for UMass Amherst?

UMass asks for a certified translation and does not say who must make it (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.

Do I need WES to apply as an undergraduate?

No. The International Admissions Office evaluates your records itself, and transfer applicants receive a preliminary credit evaluation when admitted (source).

Graduate School: translation or evaluation?

Either: an official English translation or a NACES course-by-course evaluation (source).

Can I send my high school transcripts myself?

No. They must come from your counselor or teacher; UMass refuses records sent by applicants, families or consultants (source).

I am applying from a Chinese university. What else do I need?

A CSSD verification report of your transcript, sent by the CSSD Email Service directly to UMass (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
