Transfer applicants whose transcripts do not follow the US model also need a professional course-by-course evaluation, and graduate applicants may be asked for one from the Center for Educational Documentation; we translate, the agency evaluates.

First-year: a certified translator and a country list
UMass Boston's international first-year checklist asks for an official high school record, leaving certificate and/or graduation exam results, or their notarized copies, and says every document in a foreign language must be translated into English by a certified translator (International first-year student). There is no evaluation step for first-year applicants.
Instead, the page lists by country what you must send if you already graduated: the French Baccalaureate, the German Abitur, Indian Secondary and Higher Secondary certificates with the statement of marks, the West African Examination certificate with scratch card details, and, for Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Tajikistan, the Certificate of Completion of General Secondary Education with marks (International first-year student). Those certificates are what the translation must cover in full.
Transfer: translation and course-by-course evaluation
International transfer applicants have every college send an official year-by-year statement of grades.
If those transcripts are not modeled on the American system, UMass Boston also requires a professional course-by-course evaluation, and names WES, CED, Educational Credential Evaluators and NACES members; it partners with The Evaluation Company (formerly SpanTran) for a streamlined application (International transfer student).
When requesting WES, select the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as recipient.
You may also be asked for course descriptions or syllabi for the transfer-credit review, and records not in English need English translations validated by a certified public translator (International transfer student).
Admitted students receive an official transfer credit evaluation; credits earned abroad may need an outside evaluation first (Transfer credit).
Where UMass Boston's pages differ
The three international pages describe the translator in different words: "a certified translator" for first-year applicants (first-year), "a certified public translator" for transfer applicants (transfer), and "an official public translator" for graduate applicants (graduate).
We have not resolved that difference for you; if you apply as a transfer or graduate student, ask the admissions office whether a certified translation from a professional service meets its wording before you submit.
Graduate admissions adds that most international four-year degrees are recognized, while most three-year degrees, including the Indian BA, BSc and BCom, are not; if it cannot determine equivalence, it may ask for a CED evaluation, may not accept other agencies, and never takes an evaluation in place of official transcripts (International graduate applicants).

Uploading the translation to UMass Boston
First-year applicants apply online and mail supporting materials to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 100 Morrissey Blvd. (International first-year student).
Graduate applicants upload unofficial records; official international transcripts must come from the institution, by email to gadocs@umb.edu or in a sealed envelope (International graduate applicants).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For UMass Boston that means we translate your records; the course-by-course evaluation for transfer applicants, or a CED evaluation if graduate admissions asks for one, comes from an evaluation agency.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
