Oakland Community College (Michigan): Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
Oakland Community College does not ask F-1 applicants for foreign academic records; for the I-20 it asks for bank letters and statements in English or with a certified English translation, and it does not say who must translate. Oakland Community College (Michigan) accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Credit for foreign college courses needs a NACES course-by-course evaluation sent by the agency, which we do not provide, and English course descriptions decide whether that credit is direct or elective.
No transcripts for the I-20
Passport, funds, affidavit and English scores.
Certified bank translation
Bank letters and statements in English or certified.
Descriptions in English
Without them, foreign courses count as electives only.
OCC requirements at a glance
| What OCC asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation (I-20) | Bank letters and bank statements must be in English or have a certified English translation; letters from a funding agency must be in English or have an English translation (source). |
| Who may translate | Not stated (source). |
| Documents for the I-20 | Passport valid six months ahead, proof of funds, affidavit of support and IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo scores; transfer students may send their current college transcript instead of scores (source). |
| Funds | US $22,700 for a year (more for dependents); bank documents dated within the last six months and showing the currency (source). |
| Foreign college credit | A course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, sent electronically or emailed by the agency to transcripts@oaklandcc.edu, or mailed to the Registrar's Office in Auburn Hills (source). |
| Course descriptions | Catalog descriptions in English let the Registrar consider direct course credit; without them, credit is elective only (source). |
| Deadlines (initial I-20) | June 1 for fall, September 14 for winter, February 1 for summer; late requests are not accepted (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. OCC's financial documentation requirements for the Form I-20 say bank letters and bank statements "must be in English or have a certified English translation" and do not restrict who translates (financial requirements); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. For the I-20, the bank documents are what you translate
OCC's admission and I-20 process does not ask new F-1 students for school records: you apply online, receive your MyOCC account, then request the I-20 in the F-1 Student Portal with a passport, proof of funds, the affidavit of support and English test scores (admissions and Form I-20). Transfer students in the US can send their current college transcript in place of test scores.
The translation rule sits in the financial requirements. A bank letter must be on bank letterhead, show the balance, the account holder and the bank's name, be dated within the last six months and be in English or have a certified English translation; a bank statement has the same translation rule (financial requirements). A letter from a government, company or other funding agency must be in English or have an English translation, without the word "certified". Translate the date and currency lines along with the balance, since OCC checks both.
Foreign credit: evaluation, descriptions and a counselor first
Before OCC considers credits from a college abroad, a NACES member must evaluate them course by course; OCC does not recommend one service over another (foreign transcript evaluation). The agency sends the evaluation electronically or by email to transcripts@oaklandcc.edu, or mails an official report to Transcript Evaluation at the Registrar's Office in Auburn Hills. OCC suggests meeting a counselor or advisor first, to decide whether the evaluation fee is worth it for your program.
Course descriptions make the difference between kinds of credit: if you send catalog course descriptions in English, OCC reviews your courses for possible direct credit; without them, the coursework is evaluated for elective credit only (source). If your university's descriptions are not in English, they are a document worth translating. Canadian transcripts skip the NACES step and go straight to the Registrar for a case-by-case review. Evaluation agencies set their own translation rules; see translation for credential evaluation.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Bank letter or bank statement showing the required balance
- Sponsor or funding agency letter
- Course descriptions from your university catalog, for direct credit
- University transcripts and degree, if the evaluation agency asks for a translation
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to OCC
F-1 applicants upload the bank documents and their certified translations with the Form I-20 request in OCC's F-1 Student Portal, after the admission application is approved; the I-20 arrives electronically 7 to 10 business days after a complete request (source).
Course descriptions in English can be emailed to transcripts@oaklandcc.edu; the evaluation itself must come from the NACES agency (source).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For OCC that means we translate your bank documents, sponsor letters and course descriptions; the NACES course-by-course evaluation for credit comes from the agency.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Does OCC need my foreign high school transcripts for the I-20?
They are not on OCC's list of documents for the I-20, which asks for passport, proof of funds, affidavit of support and English test scores (source).
My bank statement is not in English. What does OCC accept?
A certified English translation (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.
Do my course descriptions need to be in English?
Yes, if you want OCC to review your courses for direct credit; without English descriptions, the courses are evaluated for elective credit only (source).
Which evaluation agency does OCC accept?
Any NACES member, course by course; OCC does not recommend one over another (source).
I studied in Canada. Do I need an evaluation?
No. Canadian transcripts go directly to the Registrar, who reviews them case by case (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
