Cleveland State University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
Cleveland State University's College of Graduate Studies asks international applicants to submit school records in the original language together with a certified English translation, and does not say who must translate; the undergraduate international pages publish no translation rule of their own. Cleveland State University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Admission at both levels also requires a credential evaluation from TEC, ECE or WES, which we do not provide.
Three evaluators
TEC (through SpanTran), ECE or WES, sent electronically to CSU.
Original plus English
Graduate records go in the original language with a certified translation.
Every exam attempt
CSU wants to see all attempts at all exams to compute a US GPA.
Cleveland State requirements at a glance
| What Cleveland State asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation, graduate | School records in the original language, accompanied by a certified English translation (Graduate Studies). The graduate application form applies it when the language of instruction was not English (form). |
| Translation, undergraduate | Not stated. The international undergraduate pages ask for transcripts and an evaluation, without a translation rule (requirements, how to apply). |
| Who may translate | Not stated on any page we read. |
| Evaluation | Required for first-year, transfer and graduate applicants, from one of three approved providers: The Evaluation Company (ordered through a custom SpanTran application), ECE or WES. Course-by-course; graduate applicants may use ECE's General with GPA report (source). |
| Delivery | Name Cleveland State as recipient; the evaluation report goes to CSU electronically (source). Transcripts must be official and sent directly by the institution (where to submit). |
| Unofficial first | The International Admission Guide lets you upload unofficial foreign transcripts and diplomas in the Applicant Portal; after admission a GQA hold blocks registration until official documents arrive (guide). |
| Deadlines | International admissions: Fall 2026 July 1, Summer 2026 April 13 (source). Graduate Studies lists July 21, December 10 and April 14 (source). |
| Permanent residents | Graduate applicants with degrees from outside the US send official transcripts and diplomas for evaluation, for non-degree graduate admission (graduate catalog). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. The College of Graduate Studies asks for records in the original language "accompanied by a certified English translation" (graduate international admissions), and the older graduate application form says the same (graduate application). Neither restricts who translates, so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets the rule. Policy checked on October 13, 2026. |

Graduate applicants: the original, a certified translation, and every attempt
The translation rule at Cleveland State sits on the College of Graduate Studies' international admissions page. It asks you to request complete school records (transcripts, mark sheets and certificates) from every post-secondary institution you attended, submitted in the original language with a certified English translation. The same step adds that CSU must see all attempts at all exams in order to work out a US grade point average, so a mark sheet for a supplementary or repeated exam needs translating as well as the final one (source).
Records go to CSU from your institutions by mail or to graduate.admissions@csuohio.edu (source). The international graduate requirements add a foreign transcript evaluation for every overseas college or university transcript, sent by the evaluation service straight to CSU (source). The International Admission Guide notes that a three-year bachelor's degree from India is not treated as equal to a four-year US degree (guide).
Three approved evaluators, and what that means for the translation
For first-year, transfer and graduate admission alike, CSU reads your foreign record through an evaluation from one of three providers. The Evaluation Company offers CSU students a discounted course-by-course report through a custom SpanTran application; with ECE you pick the course-by-course report (or, for graduate applicants, the General with GPA report); with WES, the course-by-course evaluation. You must name Cleveland State as recipient, and the report is delivered electronically (source). Domestic transfer students with international transcripts follow the same rule (transfer center).
Each evaluator sets its own rules for documents in other languages, and its translation requirement applies to what you send it; see translation for WES and translation for credential evaluation.
Transfer credit: a quick estimate, then course descriptions
International transfer students receive a Preliminary Credit Assessment with the conditional offer, usually within a week. It is unofficial and can be based on unofficial transcripts, including courses still in progress (source).
After that, you meet your counselor and hand in course descriptions or syllabi along with final official transcripts, and the Office of the Registrar evaluates the coursework officially. CSU accepts coursework from institutions abroad with a grade of D or above, though some majors require a C (source). The page does not say whether syllabi must be in English; if yours are not, ask your counselor before you submit.
Where Cleveland State's pages differ
The evaluation page calls the first provider The Evaluation Company and sends you to SpanTran to order it (evaluation page); the International Admission Guide lists the three as ECE, WES or SpanTran (guide). Deadlines also vary: July 1 for fall on the international admissions page (source), July 21 on the Graduate Studies page (source), and July 20 in the guide, which also suggests May 15. Graduate Studies and the submission page ask for official records sent directly by the school (source), while the guide allows unofficial uploads until admission. The mailing address appears as both 1836 and 2121 Euclid Avenue, UN 443. We have not resolved these differences; if in doubt, ask admissions@csuohio.edu or graduate.admissions@csuohio.edu.
Documents applicants usually translate
- University transcripts and mark sheets, including every attempt at each exam
- Degree certificates
- Secondary school transcripts and leaving certificates, when your evaluator asks for a translation
- Course descriptions or syllabi, for transfer credit
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to Cleveland State
Graduate applicants have their institutions send official records by mail or to graduate.admissions@csuohio.edu, with the certified English translation alongside the original-language record (source); mailed materials go to the Office of International Graduate Admissions at 2121 Euclid Ave., UN 443, with your CSU ID (source).
The International Admission Guide also lets you upload transcripts and diplomas in the Applicant Portal after you apply, as unofficial documents, with official copies due after admission (source). Your evaluation report goes from TEC, ECE or WES straight to CSU.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Cleveland State that means we translate your transcripts, mark sheets, degree certificates and syllabi; the course-by-course evaluation that admission requires comes from TEC, ECE or WES, and official transcripts must come from your school.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Does Cleveland State require a certified translation of my transcripts?
For graduate admission, yes: the College of Graduate Studies asks for records in the original language with a certified English translation (source). The undergraduate international pages do not state a translation rule (source).
Who can translate my records for Cleveland State?
CSU's pages do not say who must translate (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is the kind of translation the rule asks for.
Which evaluation companies does Cleveland State accept?
The Evaluation Company (ordered through SpanTran's custom CSU application), ECE and WES. Name Cleveland State as recipient (source).
Do I have to send exams I failed or retook?
Yes. Graduate Studies says CSU must see all attempts at all exams to calculate a US grade point average (source).
Can I upload unofficial transcripts first?
The International Admission Guide allows unofficial uploads in the Applicant Portal; after admission a GQA hold blocks registration until official documents arrive (source).
How do transfer students get credit for courses taken abroad?
You get a Preliminary Credit Assessment from unofficial transcripts, then submit course descriptions or syllabi and official transcripts to your counselor for the Registrar's official evaluation (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
