How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026

CSU Monterey Bay publishes no translation rule of its own: international transfer and graduate applicants who attended a college or university outside the US submit their official transcripts to one of four approved foreign credit evaluation services, WES, SpanTran, ECE or IERF.

CSUMB's evaluation agencies, such as WES, ECE and IERF, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

You order the translation first and send it to the agency with your records; the evaluation itself is something we do not produce.

CSUMB at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

CSUMB asks international transfer and graduate applicants to send their transcripts to WES, SpanTran, ECE or IERF (international admissions), and WES accepts a certified translation from a professional translation service (WES translation rules); ECE and IERF accept one as well, while SpanTran (The Evaluation Company) asks for a translator certified by ATA. CSUMB requirements in detail

Translation

CSUMB states no translation rule; records from a college or university outside the US go to an approved evaluation service (International admissions). The translation is what the agency needs before it can evaluate a document not in English.

Who may translate

Set by the evaluation agency. WES, ECE and IERF accept a translation from a professional service; SpanTran asks for an ATA-certified translator (see below).

Evaluation

International transfer and graduate students who attended college abroad: WES, SpanTran, ECE or IERF (International admissions).

First-year applicants

The international first-year list asks for the equivalent of a 2.40 GPA, a high school diploma equivalent and national test scores if your country requires them; no evaluation is named (International admissions).

Where to apply

Cal State Apply ($70 fee), then the CSUMB dashboard for status and next steps (International admissions).

Deadlines (spring 2027, undergraduate)

Priority October 1, final application November 1, documents December 1, 2026 (International admissions).

Graduate deadlines

Set by program, each with its own transcript deadline, e.g. March 12, 2027 for the education master's with a credential (International admissions).

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

CSUMB names four services and each sets its own translation rule.

WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator, such as a certified translation agency, does not accept translations by applicants and does not translate documents itself.

ECE wants complete, word-for-word translations in the same format as the original and lets applicants prepare them; for $85 it sells a Translation Waiver, under which it translates internally for the report and no translation is delivered to you.

IERF asks for typed, line-by-line, word-for-word translations and does not require them to be certified, notarized or sworn.

SpanTran, now The Evaluation Company, is stricter: an outside translator must be certified by the American Translators Association, or its own team translates after your application is complete.

CSUMB offers a discount on SpanTran through its own application; if you choose it, eVerbary can assign a translator individually certified by ATA for the languages ATA certifies (see below).

Transfer, graduate and first-year applicants

The evaluation requirement on CSUMB's international admissions page is written for international transfer and graduate students who attended a college or university outside the US.

Lower division transfers, with fewer than 60 transferable units, also need an official high school transcript and diploma equivalent with a 2.4 GPA; upper division transfers need a 2.0 GPA in transferable work and good standing at their last college. Graduate applicants also check program-specific requirements.

For first-year applicants the page lists the GPA equivalent, a high school diploma equivalent and national test scores if required by the home country, and names no evaluation or translation rule.

Ask International Admissions how it wants your high school records presented if they are not in English.

The order of steps for CSUMB

Translate first, then open your file with the agency so it can start on a complete set: transcripts, degree certificates and the certified translations.

CSUMB's undergraduate document deadline for spring 2027 is December 1, 2026, and graduate programs set their own transcript deadlines (International admissions).

Proof of funding, the financial affidavit and a passport scan go to CSUMB with your application.

Need a certified translation for CSUMB?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • University or college transcripts and mark sheets
  • Degree certificates and diplomas
  • High school transcripts and diploma, for lower division transfers
  • Bank statements or sponsor letters, if not in English

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to CSUMB

  • For college records from outside the US, the translation is not sent to CSUMB: it goes to WES, SpanTran, ECE or IERF with your transcripts, and the agency sends its evaluation (International admissions). WES, for example, takes translations in your WES account (WES).

  • The application itself goes through Cal State Apply; after submitting, you follow your checklist in the CSUMB dashboard (International admissions).

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for CSUMB, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For CSUMB that means we translate your records for the agency; the evaluation is ordered by you from WES, SpanTran, ECE or IERF after the translation.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does CSU Monterey Bay require a certified translation?

CSUMB itself publishes no translation rule; it sends transfer and graduate applicants with records from abroad to an evaluation service (International admissions). The agency asks for the translation: WES, for example, wants one from a professional translator (WES).

Which evaluation agencies does CSUMB accept?

WES, SpanTran, ECE and IERF, with a discount on SpanTran through CSUMB's own application (International admissions).

Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for SpanTran?

Yes, on request through a free quote, for Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) or Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page). ATA certifies no other languages into English; SpanTran asks for an ATA-certified outside translator (TEC).

Do first-year applicants need an evaluation?

The first-year list names none; it asks for a GPA equivalent, a diploma equivalent and national test scores if required (International admissions).

When are the deadlines for spring 2027?

Final application November 1 and documents December 1, 2026 for undergraduates (International admissions).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
