The notarial certification, and what it costs to get wrong
A Serbian power (punomoćje) for property and other significant acts requires notarial certification, and the notary's clause, stamp and register number are on the document.
A plain signed power is adequate for some acts and refused for the ones that matter. We name which form the document takes and reproduce the notary's references.
Consular powers, and the diaspora
Serbia has a very large diaspora, and consulates grant powers as notarial acts for use in Serbia — the normal route for property and inheritance matters handled from abroad.
A power certified before a foreign notary needs an apostille and a certified Serbian translation by a court interpreter. We name the issuing office and say what further steps the route implies.
The court interpreter requirement
Serbia requires translations of foreign documents to be made by a court-appointed permanent interpreter (stalni sudski tumač) whose seal appears on the translation.
Our certified translation serves the US side; the Serbian side needs a court interpreter's translation done there. We say so rather than let a client assume one covers both.
Two alphabets, and the JMBG
Serbian is written in both Cyrillic and Latin and both are official, so a name may appear one way on the power and another on an identity document. One name, two alphabets.
