The vaccination booklet, and the dom zdravlja
Serbian childhood immunisation is compulsory and delivered through the dom zdravlja, the community health centre, which holds the definitive record alongside the personal vaccination booklet.
A certificate can be obtained from the centre where the child is registered. Serbia gives BCG at birth, which is not a US vaccine and leaves a scar examiners ask about.
JMBG, LBO and the insurance card
Serbian medical documents carry the JMBG — thirteen digits encoding date of birth, region of registration and sex — and the LBO, a separate health insurance identifier.
Two numbers, routinely confused. We reproduce each as labelled. The JMBG does not change with a name and is the cross-check across the file.
Two alphabets, in the same file
Serbian is written in both Cyrillic and Latin and both are official, so a patient name appears one way on a hospital report and another on an insurance card.
That is one name in one language in two alphabets and it is the commonest false alarm in a Serbian file. We state the equivalence rather than leaving a reader to compare spellings.
Otpusna lista, and Yugoslav records
Hospitals issue an otpusna lista — a discharge list — summarising the admission, the findings and the therapy, and specialist reports go back to the chosen doctor.
Records from before 1991 were made under Yugoslav administration and may name institutions in what are now other countries. We name each as printed. See our Serbian page.
