The immunisation passport, and the personal GP
Bulgarian childhood immunisation is compulsory and recorded in an имунизационен паспорт, with the definitive record held by the личен лекар, the registered personal doctor, who administers the schedule.
A certificate can be obtained from that practice even where the booklet is lost. Bulgaria gives BCG at birth with later revaccination checks, and it is not a US vaccine.
The EGN, with its leading zero
Bulgarian medical documents carry the EGN, ten digits encoding the date of birth and sex with month offsets marking births before 1900 and after 1999. It does not change with a name.
It frequently starts with a zero, which spreadsheets eat. We reproduce it exactly, because a number missing its leading digit fails verification.
NZOK, and where the record sits
Care is financed through the NZOK, the national health insurance fund, and the record sits with the personal doctor plus whatever hospital treated the patient. Bulgaria has built a national health information system from which a summary can be obtained.
Patients receive an епикриза — an epicrisis, the discharge summary — which is the principal document from a hospital stay. We name each document and its author.
Cyrillic, three names and transliteration
Bulgarian medical documents are in Cyrillic, and names have three parts: given name, a patronymic from the father's given name, and the family name, both of the latter gendered.
Bulgaria legislated an official Latin transliteration in 2009 that may differ from a family's long-standing US spelling. We reproduce the Cyrillic and note the renderings. See our Bulgarian page.
