Accredited exams, and the complex requirement
Hungarian language examinations are state-accredited through a national accreditation centre, and several systems hold accreditation — ECL, the Origó system, and others. The certificate names the system and the accreditation.
Hungarian practice also distinguishes a complex examination, covering both oral and written parts, from single oral or written examinations. A "B2 complex" is a different document from a "B2 written", and the distinction matters for the purposes these certificates serve.
Why the certificate exists
Hungarian language certificates are required for Hungarian-taught higher education, for several professional registrations, and Hungarian degree programmes have historically required a foreign language certificate for graduation — which is why Hungarian academic files contain language certificates in other languages too.
So a certificate in a Hungarian file may be a Hungarian-language certificate or an English or German one required for a Hungarian degree. We name the language certified.
Surname first, and the accents
Hungarian writes the family name before the given name, so a certificate reading Nagy István belongs to István Nagy. In a credential file matched against a passport, that reversal is a routine source of apparent mismatch.
Hungarian also uses ő and ű alongside the more familiar accented vowels, and stripping them changes names. We reproduce the Hungarian and make the name order explicit.
Simplified naturalisation, and the language
Hungary's simplified naturalisation route for people of Hungarian descent requires Hungarian language ability, assessed at interview rather than by a fixed certificate level.
