The document that gets papers from Eritrea
For Eritreans abroad, a power of attorney is often the only way to obtain documents from Eritrea. Most Eritrean embassies do not issue civil status certificates. Instead, the applicant proves Eritrean nationality at the embassy, which issues an authorisation for a person in Eritrea. That person takes it to the civil status office, usually that of Zoba Maekel in Asmara, with proof that the applicant paid the 2% diaspora tax (unless the embassy confirms the applicant is unemployed) and a CV listing the applicant's places of residence.
Inside Eritrea, someone who cannot appear at the sub-zone administration can send a representative with a power of attorney certified by a notary. Powers of attorney are also used to apply for police certificates and to carry out a divorce from abroad. See the police record and divorce pages.
Translating it, stamps included
We translate the full text: the parties' names, the powers granted, reference numbers and every stamp. Names are given in the order printed with your passport spelling. See our Tigrinya and Arabic pages.
Eritrea is not a party to the Apostille Convention. Documents issued in Eritrea are authenticated by the Authentication Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which adds three stamps: the round ministry stamp, a rectangular stamp with the details and the official's name stamp. USCIS requires neither apostille nor authentication; if your document has these stamps, we translate them.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Can a relative in Eritrea get my birth certificate?
Yes, with an authorisation issued through an Eritrean embassy. We translate the certificate once you have it.
Does the embassy require the 2% tax?
Eritrean offices commonly ask for proof of it before consular services. Ask the embassy what it needs in your case.
My document has Foreign Ministry stamps on the back.
Those are the ministry's authentication. Each stamp is translated.
