Family council, court, then certificate
An Eritrean civil divorce happens in steps. The spouses first go through counselling and a family council of relatives from both sides. If that fails, they sign an agreement on separation that settles custody, maintenance, the family home and property, and the matter goes to a court, where witnesses confirm the divorce. With the court's confirmation, the civil status office (in Asmara, that of Zoba Maekel) issues a divorce certificate.
A file can therefore hold the agreement, the court's decision and the certificate, each with its own date. We translate whichever you submit, stamps included. Divorce decrees have been issued in Tigrinya and English; see our Tigrinya page. The separation stage is described on our legal separation page.
Muslim divorces and divorces from abroad
Muslim family matters go to the Sharia courts, which are departments of the state zone courts and issue divorce certificates of their own, in Arabic. See our Arabic page.
A spouse living abroad can instruct a representative in Eritrea through an Eritrean embassy, and the court then confirms the divorce without that spouse appearing. The papers may name the representative too; every name is translated. The spouses' names should match the Eritrean marriage certificate, and we keep the spellings consistent with your passport.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
I have the court's decision but no certificate.
We translate the decision. Ask the receiving office whether it also wants the certificate from the civil status office.
My divorce went through a representative while I was abroad.
That route exists in Eritrean practice. We translate the court document and, if you need it, the authorisation you gave.
My decree is in Tigrinya and English.
We translate the Tigrinya parts and the stamps, and tell you before you pay what that covers.
