Issued in English, with conditions

Eritrean colleges issue transcripts in English, so the transcript itself often needs no translation. A transcript is not official without the institution's seal and signatures. Official copies carry the note "Not valid if transcript is handled by applicant", and a copy stamped "Student copy" was not sent by the institution. A credential evaluator may insist on the official version.

The University of Asmara took its last students in 2003 and closed in 2004; since then degrees come from separate colleges such as the Eritrea Institute of Technology at Mai Nefhi, the Orotta School of Medicine and Dental Medicine and the College of Business and Economics at Halhale. We translate whatever is not in English, including Tigrinya stamps. See our credential evaluation page.

National service and the 2% tax

Graduation depends on completing national service. A student who finished the coursework but not the service may hold a transcript stating that all academic requirements are complete but that the student could not graduate. That note is part of the record and is reproduced as written.

To have a college send a transcript abroad, Eritreans in the diaspora are asked to pay the 2% diaspora tax, which many cannot or will not do. Ask the receiving office what it accepts then. See the Eritrean university diploma and secondary certificate pages and our Tigrinya page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

My transcript is already in English.

If every part, stamps included, is in English, it needs no translation. We check and tell you.

It is stamped "Student copy".

It is a copy issued to you, not one sent by the college. We translate it as it is; ask the receiving office whether it accepts it.

I studied at the University of Asmara.

Its records remain valid evidence of your studies. We translate any part that is not in English.

Is acceptance by universities, colleges and schools guaranteed?

Yes. Our certified translations are guaranteed to be accepted by universities, colleges and schools in the United States — and by USCIS, the NVC, courts, government agencies and employers — or your money back. The guarantee covers the translation itself, not the original document or the admission decision, and it covers credential evaluation agencies such as WES and ECE as well. Full terms are in our refund policy.
