Temporary diploma first, final diploma later
Eritrean graduates first receive a temporary diploma, which counts for employment and further study. The final diploma is withheld until national service is completed, so issue dates often differ from one document to another. According to the national higher education board, the colleges that replaced the University of Asmara had issued only temporary diplomas as of 2012, and the university's own last graduates were still waiting for final diplomas.
Diplomas are issued in English. The University of Asmara's final diploma was printed on special paper with the graduate's name filled in by an artist. A diploma that is entirely in English needs no translation, but stamps or notes in Tigrinya do; we check before quoting. See our Tigrinya page.
Diploma or degree?
Eritrean colleges award two- to three-year diplomas, four-year bachelor's degrees (five for engineering, law and pharmacy, six for medicine) and some two-year master's degrees. Ministries also run vocational schools whose "diplomas" are not higher education, and a nursing diploma naming only the School of Nursing and Health Technology is probably an older vocational one. We translate titles exactly as written so the evaluator can tell which is which.
Higher education is accredited by the National Commission for Higher Education. See our university translation page, the Eritrean transcript page and the language certificate page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
I only have a temporary diploma.
That is what many Eritrean graduates hold. We translate it as issued; the evaluator decides how to treat it.
My diploma and transcript have different dates.
Common, because the final diploma follows national service. Each date is translated as printed.
Does my diploma need translating?
Usually not the English text. We check every stamp and seal and tell you what, if anything, does.
Is acceptance by universities, colleges and schools guaranteed?
Yes. Our certified translations are guaranteed to be accepted by universities, colleges and schools in the United States — and by USCIS, the NVC, courts, government agencies and employers — or your money back. The guarantee covers the translation itself, not the original document or the admission decision, and it covers credential evaluation agencies such as WES and ECE as well. Full terms are in our refund policy.
