Issued by the Eritrea Police Headquarters
Eritrean police certificates are issued by the Eritrea Police Headquarters in Asmara, with fingerprints taken on the spot. According to Canada's immigration department, they are available only to Eritrean citizens who have completed national service and to foreigners with a residence permit, and citizens must also show that they have paid the tax Eritrea levies on its citizens wherever they live.
From abroad, the application can be made by a representative holding a power of attorney or through an Eritrean embassy, with copies of the identity card and passport and a full set of fingerprints. Many Eritreans in asylum or refugee cases cannot meet those conditions; ask the receiving office what it accepts instead. See our asylum translation page.
Translating the certificate
We translate the certificate in full: the reference number, the result of the search, the stamps and the officer's signature block. Names are given in the order printed, following your passport spelling. If every part, stamps included, is in English, it needs no translation and we will say so. See our Tigrinya page.
A court decision about a criminal case is a separate document and is translated as one. For visa cases see what the NVC asks for, and for identity papers the Eritrean identity card page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
I did not finish national service. Can I get a police certificate?
Canada's guidance says Eritrean certificates are issued only to citizens who have done national service. Ask the office that wants one what it accepts instead.
Can a relative apply for me?
A representative with a power of attorney can apply at the Police Headquarters. We translate the certificate once you have it.
Do you translate court records as well?
Yes. A judgment or court letter is translated as its own document, with its file number and stamps.
