Escritura pública, and the repertorio
A Chilean power for acts requiring a public instrument is granted by escritura pública before a notary, and the deed carries a repertorio number and the notary's office.
For lesser acts a private document with signatures authorised by a notary (autorización de firma) suffices. The two are different instruments and the endorsement says which. We name it.
The electronic notary, and the verification code
Chile has moved substantially to electronic notarial documents, and a copy carries a verification code that can be checked against the notary's system.
An electronically issued Chilean power is the normal form rather than a lesser one, and we transcribe the code so the receiving office can check it.
Powers used abroad, and the apostille
Chile joined the Apostille Convention in 2016, so a Chilean power for use in the United States carries an apostille where an older one carried a consular legalisation chain.
Documents from before that date are not defective. We translate whichever endorsement the document carries and name it.
The RUT, and revocation
Parties are identified by RUT — the same number as the RUN for an individual — with a check digit after a hyphen that may be the letter K, and a company by its own RUT.
