Washington University in St. Louis: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) asks international first-year applicants for certified English translations of their transcripts, grading-system description, exam results and school-leaving certificates, without saying who must translate them. Washington University in St. Louis accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Graduate rules depend on the school: McKelvey Engineering asks for a translation from a professional translation service, while Arts & Sciences prefers the issuing institution's translation and otherwise accepts services such as WES and ECE.

What WashU asks for
TranslationCertified English translations of the original transcripts or certified copies, the grading-system description, exam results and school-leaving certificates (source).
Who may translateNot named for undergraduates (source). McKelvey Engineering graduate: a professional translation service (source).
What the records must showEvery secondary-level course, any study beyond secondary school, the subjects of each year with month and year, the length of each course, and the number of lectures or lab periods (source).
EvaluationNot named for undergraduate admission; advanced standing is decided after you arrive and meet an advisor (source). McKelvey encourages, but does not require, a NACES evaluation (source).
TransferOpen to international students only if they already study at a US university; your WashU dean decides transfer credit (source).
Arts & Sciences graduateTranslation by the issuing institution, signed in ink and sealed; if your school does not translate, services such as WES and ECE (source).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. WashU's undergraduate admissions asks for "certified English translations" of all academic documents (first-year international applicants) and does not restrict who makes them, and McKelvey Engineering's graduate checklist asks for a translation "from a professional translation service" (McKelvey checklist); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets both. More than a transcript: what WashU wants translated

WashU's first-year international page lists five kinds of document: original transcripts or certified copies, a description of the grading system, exam results (IGCSE, HKCEE, predicted A-Levels, national exams), school-leaving certificates, and certified English translations of all of them. The grading-system description is easy to forget; if your school issues it in another language, it needs a translation like everything else. We translate grades exactly as written and never convert them.

WashU also says what your records must contain: every secondary course, the subjects covered each year with the month and year, the duration of each course and the number of lectures or laboratory periods. If your school states hours or periods on the transcript, the translation carries them over line by line so the admissions reader can see them.

Graduate school: two schools, two rules

There is no single graduate rule at WashU. The McKelvey School of Engineering asks you to upload the transcript in the original language and an English translation "from a professional translation service" in the Academic History section, and encourages a NACES evaluation for degrees earned abroad without requiring it (source).

The Office of Graduate Studies in Arts & Sciences asks that foreign transcripts be translated by the issuing institution, uploaded with the original and signed in ink and sealed. If your institution does not provide an English translation, it accepts translations by "services such as WES and ECE", and it also accepts credential evaluations from vendors including ECE, WES and The Evaluation Company (source). That wording names evaluation agencies; if your university will not translate and you are applying to an Arts & Sciences program, ask artscigradadmissions@wustl.edu whether a certified translation from a professional service is enough before you order.

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to WashU

First-year applicants send transcripts with the School Report through the Common App or Coalition application, with the certified translations of each document (source).

Graduate applicants upload the original and the translation with the application: in McKelvey's Academic History section (source), or in Arts & Sciences, where official transcripts follow after you accept an offer (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For WashU that means we translate your records, grading scale and certificates; a credential evaluation, if a graduate program asks for one, comes from an evaluation agency.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my documents for WashU undergraduate admission?

WashU asks for certified English translations and does not name a required translator (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.

Does my grading scale need a translation for WashU?

Yes. The description of the grading system is one of the documents WashU lists, and it asks for certified English translations of all of them (source).

Can I apply to WashU as a transfer from a university abroad?

Not directly. International transfer applicants must already be studying at a university in the US (source).

Who can translate my transcript for McKelvey Engineering graduate programs?

A professional translation service; you upload the original and the English translation together (source).

Do I need WES for a WashU Arts & Sciences graduate program?

Not as a rule. Arts & Sciences accepts credential evaluations, and accepts translations by services such as WES and ECE when your institution does not translate (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
