University of Southern Mississippi: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Southern Miss's Graduate Bulletin asks international graduate applicants to send certified English translations with the transcripts each school sends, and it does not say who has to make them; the undergraduate pages do not mention translations at all. University of Southern Mississippi accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Transfer students with foreign college work also need a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, which we do not provide.

What Southern Miss asks for
Translation (graduate)Certified English translations, submitted to International Admissions with the official transcripts (Graduate Bulletin). No translator type is named.
Translation (undergraduate)The international freshman and transfer requirements do not mention translations (International undergraduate admissions).
FreshmenCopies of high school transcripts and/or school leaving exam results; each applicant is evaluated on the criteria of the country where they studied, with a 2.5 core GPA expected (International undergraduate admissions).
Transfers from abroadAn official course-by-course evaluation from a current NACES member, plus course descriptions or syllabi in English; credit may not be posted without them (International undergraduate admissions).
Graduate evaluationThe Office of International Admissions evaluates foreign credentials and computes your GPA before the school reviews the file (Graduate Bulletin 2026-27: admission requirements and procedures).
Three-year degreesCompleted outside the EU: add a transcript with one more year of study, or a NACES evaluation showing a full bachelor's equivalency (International graduate admissions).
DeadlinesInternational applications by May 1 for fall and October 1 for spring; graduate also February 1 for summer (undergraduate, graduate).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. The 2026-27 Graduate Bulletin lists certified English translations among the documents sent to International Admissions and does not restrict who makes them, so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets that rule. Three different paths: freshman, transfer, graduate

Southern Miss treats each level differently. International freshmen send copies of their high school transcripts or school leaving exam results with the USM or Common Application, and the university judges them against the education system of the country where they studied rather than against a US core curriculum (International undergraduate admissions). There is no outside evaluation for that step.

Transfer applicants with college work outside the US need an official course-by-course evaluation from a current NACES member and English course descriptions or syllabi for every foreign course. Southern Miss names WES, ECE, GCE, JS&A and SpanTran as the agencies most used, and says ECE, SpanTran (TEC) and JS&A offer its applicants a discount through institution-specific applications (International undergraduate admissions). Graduate applicants skip the agency: the Graduate Bulletin says the Office of International Admissions evaluates foreign credentials itself, computes the GPA and then forwards the file to the school.

Where the translation rule lives

The certified-translation requirement appears in the Graduate Bulletin, in the procedure for non-US applicants: an official transcript sent by each institution, certified English translations and other documents all go to International Admissions, while test scores come from the testing agency. Each program needs its own online application and fee.

Transcripts reach International Admissions by courier or post to 118 College Drive #5135 in Hattiesburg, through a transcript service, or by email to intladmissions@usm.edu, but only from an official university address (International graduate admissions). If you have a three-year degree from outside the EU, plan for either a transcript showing one more year of study or a NACES equivalency report. The undergraduate bulletin sets the same May 1 and October 1 dates for complete files from applicants abroad (Undergraduate Bulletin 2026-27: admission policies).

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to Southern Miss

Graduate applicants: each school sends its official transcript to the Office of International Admissions (by post, courier, transcript service, or email from an official university address to intladmissions@usm.edu); send the certified English translations to the same office (International graduate admissions, Graduate Bulletin).

Freshmen submit copies of their records with the application; transfers have the NACES agency send the course-by-course evaluation (International undergraduate admissions).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Southern Miss that means we translate your transcripts, diplomas and course descriptions; the NACES course-by-course evaluation transfers need comes from an evaluation agency.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my documents for Southern Miss?

The Graduate Bulletin asks for certified English translations and does not limit who makes them. A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.

Do I need a credential evaluation as an international freshman?

No. Freshmen send copies of transcripts or exam results and are evaluated on their own country's system (International undergraduate admissions).

Which agency should transfer students use?

Any current NACES member, course-by-course. ECE, SpanTran (TEC) and JS&A offer Southern Miss applicants a discount (International undergraduate admissions).

My bachelor's degree took three years. Can I apply to a master's?

If it was completed outside the EU, add a transcript showing one more year of study or a NACES evaluation showing bachelor's equivalency (International graduate admissions).

Can my university email my transcript?

Yes, from an official university email address to intladmissions@usm.edu, or through a transcript service (International graduate admissions).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
