University of Nevada, Reno: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
The University of Nevada, Reno Graduate School asks for a word-for-word English translation of any credential not in English, certified as true by a university official, a US embassy or consulate, or an approved professional translating service, signed by the translator and sent with the original-language documents; UNR's international undergraduate and transfer pages ask for official transcripts but do not mention translation. University of Nevada, Reno accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. UNR evaluates foreign coursework in-house, so no agency evaluation is required; a NACES course-by-course report is optional and is not something we provide.
Word-for-word, signed
Graduate School rule: certified as true, translator's signature.
Sealed by the school
Graduate transcripts mailed from the country of origin.
In-house evaluation
NACES course-by-course accepted but not required.
UNR requirements at a glance
| What UNR asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation (graduate) | Certified English translations of all transcripts, word-for-word, certified as true, signed by the translator and accompanied by the original-language documents (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). |
| Who may certify | A university official, a US embassy or consulate representative, the US Information Service, the US Education Foundation, or an approved professional translating service (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). |
| Undergraduate and transfer (F-1) | Official transcripts from each school; the pages do not mention translation (first-year, transfer). |
| Official delivery (undergraduate) | By post in a sealed envelope, by a school official's password-protected email to OISS, or by fax from the school with a cover letter on letterhead (Admissions information for undergraduate international students). |
| Official delivery (graduate) | Requested from the graduating institution and mailed from the country of origin in an envelope the school stamps and seals; applicants cannot seal it themselves (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). |
| Grading scale | Graduate applicants must provide the foreign institution's grading scale, or contact Graduate Admissions if they cannot (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). |
| Evaluation | In-house; a course-by-course evaluation from any NACES member is accepted instead (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). |
| US residents transferring | A certified English translation "using a third-party evaluator"; options listed are UNR's own Language Bank, ECE and WES (How to apply as a transfer student (international transcript for domestic students)). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. The Graduate School lists "an approved professional translating service" among those who may certify a word-for-word English translation (graduate international requirements), and the international undergraduate pages set no other rule (undergraduate). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Policy checked on October 13, 2026. |

The Graduate School sets the translation rule
UNR's international admissions pages for first-year and transfer students list the documents and how a transcript counts as official, but they say nothing about language (first-year, transfer). The detailed rule sits with the Graduate School: any credential not in English needs a word-for-word translation, certified as true by one of five kinds of certifier, the last being "an approved professional translating service", signed by the translator and sent with the original (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). UNR does not publish a list of approved services.
Undergraduate applicants have no separate rule to follow. A word-for-word, signed, certified translation sent with the original is the most cautious choice, and OISS can confirm what it wants for your file before you send anything.
Envelopes sealed by the school, and the grading scale
The Graduate School is strict about delivery. Transcripts must be requested from the graduating institution and mailed from the country of origin in an envelope the institution stamps and seals; if you are at home you may collect the sealed envelope and express-mail it yourself, and if you are already at a US school its registrar sends it (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). Unofficial copies can be uploaded for the program's review; official ones are needed once a program recommends admission (how to apply).
Because UNR converts grades in-house, it also asks for the grading scale of each foreign school (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). Translate the grading key or the back of the transcript along with the grades, and send the translation with the original-language record it belongs to.
Where UNR's pages differ
The international undergraduate pages are silent on translation (Admissions information for undergraduate international students). The Graduate School accepts a translation certified by an approved professional translating service (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). The page for US residents transferring with foreign records asks for a certified translation "using a third-party evaluator" and lists three options: the Northern Nevada International Center Language Bank, which says its work is done by professional translators, ECE and WES (transfer, Language Bank). We have not resolved that difference. If you apply through that domestic transfer route, ask Admissions and Records whether a translation from another professional service is accepted before you order one.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school transcripts and graduation certificate (undergraduate)
- University transcripts or mark sheets, all years
- Degree certificate or diploma
- The grading scale or grading key of each foreign school
- Bank statements for the financial documents
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UNR
Graduate applicants upload unofficial transcripts and translations with the online application; the official transcript then arrives from the school in its sealed envelope, with the translation and original-language documents together (how to apply, requirements).
Undergraduate and transfer F-1 applicants have each school send transcripts to the OISS Admissions Team by post, password-protected email or fax, and email the passport page to OISS@unr.edu (Admissions information for undergraduate international students).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. At UNR we cover the certified translation of your records; we cannot mail sealed transcripts for your school, and the optional NACES course-by-course evaluation comes from an evaluation agency.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my transcripts for UNR graduate admission?
A university official, a US embassy or consulate, the US Information Service, the US Education Foundation, or an approved professional translating service, certifying a word-for-word translation signed by the translator (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.
Does UNR ask undergraduates for a translation?
Its international first-year and transfer pages do not mention translation (first-year, transfer). The Graduate School rule is the most detailed one UNR publishes; if in doubt, ask OISS.
Do I need a WES or ECE evaluation for UNR?
No. UNR evaluates foreign coursework in-house and accepts a course-by-course report from any NACES member instead (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)).
Can I seal the transcript envelope myself?
No. For graduate admission the graduating institution must stamp and seal it; you may pick it up and mail it yourself from your home country (Graduate international student admissions (Graduate School)).
I am a US resident with foreign college credit. What does UNR want?
An official transcript and a certified English translation; the transfer page lists UNR's Language Bank, ECE and WES as options (How to apply as a transfer student (international transcript for domestic students)).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
