University of Denver: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

The University of Denver asks first-year, transfer and graduate applicants to include certified English translations with any transcript in another language, and graduate applicants also with their proof of degree; none of its pages says who must make them. University of Denver accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. DU arranges the credential evaluation of foreign graduate records itself, for a $50 fee, so we cover the translation and you do not order an evaluation.

University of Denver: requirements for documents in another language
What DU asks for
TranslationCertified English translations for any transcript in another language (first-year, transfer); for graduate applicants, also for proof of degree (Graduate admission requirements for international applicants).
Who may translateNot stated on any DU page we read.
Undergraduate deliveryEach school sends official transcripts to International Student Admission in separate sealed envelopes, by mail or electronically through Naviance or the Common Application (International first-year applicants).
EvaluationUndergraduate: none required; DU reads records in the context of the home country's system (International first-year applicants). Graduate: DU sends foreign postsecondary records to a third-party evaluator for a $50 fee (Graduate admission requirements for international applicants).
Graduate originalsPaper transcripts in an envelope with the registrar's stamp or signature across the flap; emailed transcripts are not accepted (bulletin).
TimingFirst-year deadlines Nov. 1 (Early Decision I, Early Action) and Jan. 15 (Early Decision II, Regular Decision); graduate transcript review takes two to three weeks (first-year, graduate).
Country rulesA country-by-country table lists the grades and certificates DU expects from each system (Academic credentials by country).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. DU's international admission pages require "certified English translations" for any transcript in another language and do not restrict who makes them (first-year, transfer, graduate); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. One wording, and a warning about errors

DU uses the same phrase everywhere: "certified English translations". It appears on the first-year and transfer pages for international applicants, on the graduate admission requirements, and at the Daniels College of Business, which asks for both the original documents and certified translations (first-year, transfer, graduate, Daniels). No page names a type of translator or a list of providers.

The graduate bulletin adds a line most universities leave out: errors or omissions in English translations may be grounds for refusal or dismissal, and it sends questions to the Office of Graduate Education (Graduate bulletin: transcripts and proof of degree). That makes completeness the point to check. Every grade, stamp, note and the grading key should appear in the translation, and the degree title should be kept next to its English rendering.

Undergraduate: credentials by country

DU's Academic Credentials by Country page lists, for each school system, what to send while you are still in high school and after graduating. Applicants from India send the Standard X and Standard XII board certificates; from Argentina, final transcripts and a proof of graduation such as the Título de Bachiller or Perito Mercantil; from China, transcripts for grades 10 to 12 and the graduation certificate. A-Level results come directly from the exam board, and A-Levels and some advanced standing courses can earn up to 45 quarter hours of credit.

Transfer applicants send transcripts for all completed higher education, and also high school transcripts if they have fewer than 30 semester (45 quarter) transferable credits (International transfer applicants). After admission, your secondary school must send final official transcripts before you enroll (Academic credentials by country); if those are not in English, the final ones need a translation too.

Graduate: DU orders the evaluation

For degrees earned or in progress outside the US, DU releases your transcripts and proof of degree to a third-party international credential evaluator and charges a non-refundable $50 fee before the application is processed; the report is for DU's use only and is not given to the applicant (Graduate admission requirements for international applicants). You do not choose or pay an agency yourself; since certified translations must accompany those documents, they travel to the evaluator with them.

Unofficial transcripts are accepted while you apply; official ones must arrive by the start of your first term, or a registration hold is placed (bulletin). A separate proof of degree is not needed if the transcript shows the full degree name and the month and year it was awarded (Graduate admission requirements for international applicants).

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to DU

Undergraduate applicants apply through the Common Application; schools send transcripts to International Student Admission by mail in sealed envelopes or electronically via Naviance or the Common App, and the certified translation goes with the transcript (International first-year applicants).

Graduate applicants upload transcripts, proof of degree and translations with the application for review; official records follow by the start of the first term (Graduate admission requirements for international applicants, bulletin).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. At DU we cover the certified translations; the graduate credential evaluation is ordered by DU from its own evaluator, and official transcripts still have to come from your school.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my transcripts for the University of Denver?

DU asks for certified English translations and does not say who must make them (first-year, graduate). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.

Do I need to order a WES or ECE evaluation for DU graduate admission?

No. DU sends foreign postsecondary records to its own third-party evaluator and charges a $50 fee; the report is not released to you (Graduate admission requirements for international applicants).

Does my diploma need a translation if my transcript already shows the degree?

If the transcript shows the full degree name and the month and year awarded, DU does not need a separate proof of degree; if you do send one, it needs a certified translation (Graduate admission requirements for international applicants).

What happens if there is an error in my translation?

DU's graduate bulletin says errors or omissions in English translations may be grounds for refusal or dismissal (Graduate bulletin: transcripts and proof of degree).

Which documents does DU want from my country?

Check the Academic Credentials by Country page; it lists the grades and certificates for each system, before and after graduation.

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
