Colorado State University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
Colorado State University asks that any record not in English come with a certified literal English translation for undergraduate applicants, and with a certified English translation next to the native-language record for graduate applicants; none of its pages says who must make it. Colorado State University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. CSU does not require a credential evaluation; what it is strict about is how the original records reach it, especially at the Graduate School.
Literal and certified
Same wording for freshmen, transfers and residents.
Both languages
Graduate records go in the native language and in English.
Email is not official
For the Graduate School, even from your university.
CSU requirements at a glance
| What CSU asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | A certified literal English translation must accompany any record not in English (freshmen, transfer); the international apply guide says certified English translation. |
| Who may translate | Not stated on CSU’s admissions or Graduate School pages. |
| Evaluation | No evaluation requirement stated; transfer credit is evaluated by CSU after admission. |
| Where to apply | First-year: Common Application. Transfer and second bachelor’s: CSU Application. Graduate: the Graduate School’s online application, school code 4075 (source, Graduate School). |
| Official records (undergraduate) | Sent directly from the school, or stamped and sealed; if only one original exists, an attested or certified copy (freshmen, transfer). |
| Official records (graduate) | Mailed by the issuer or in its sealed envelope; attested or apostilled copies accepted; emailed and notarized copies not accepted (source). |
| Deadlines | First-year Fall: December 1 early action, February 1 regular; Spring: November 1, then rolling (source). |
| US residents | Residents with coursework abroad send the original official transcript plus a certified translation (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. CSU's freshman and transfer pages ask for "a certified literal English translation" and its Graduate School for a certified English translation, without restricting who makes it; a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Undergraduates: one rule for every applicant type
CSU uses the same sentence across its undergraduate pages: if a record is not in English, a certified literal English translation must go with it. It applies to first-year applicants' transcripts or mark sheets (source), to transfer applicants' final secondary transcript and every college transcript (source), and to US citizens and permanent residents who studied abroad (source). "Literal" matters here: every subject, mark and note on the record should appear in the translation, in the same order.
First-year decisions can be made on your most recent transcripts and are provisional until the final transcript verifying graduation arrives. Transfer credit is evaluated only after admission, and CSU encourages admitted students to bring course descriptions, syllabi or catalogs to help it grant equivalent credit (source).
Graduate School: both languages, and strict about delivery
The Graduate School asks for every transcript in both the native language and a certified English translation, front and back uploaded, with the grading scale. A diploma is needed if the transcript does not show the degree and date. Departments decide whether they accept unofficial transcripts for admission; officials must arrive before you register for your second semester, or you are dismissed (source, catalog).
Official transcripts from abroad must be mailed by the institution or forwarded in its sealed envelope; emailed transcripts are not official even when the institution sends them. Copies attested by the university or apostilled are accepted; notarized copies are not, nor are records certified by a professor rather than the registrar. Applicants from India send semester or annual marksheets and the degree certificate; applicants from China send graduation and degree certificates in Chinese with an English translation (how to apply, official transcripts).
Where CSU's pages differ
CSU's undergraduate transfer page treats electronic transcripts emailed directly from a college or university official as official; the Graduate School says emailed transcripts are not official, even from the issuing institution. The rules belong to different offices and we have not resolved them; follow the page for the level you are applying to.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school transcripts or mark sheets and diploma
- University transcripts and diplomas, front and back
- Grading scale or legend from the transcript
- Indian semester marksheets or Chinese graduation and degree certificates
- Course descriptions or syllabi for transfer credit
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to CSU
Undergraduates send transcripts with the translation attached through the steps in the undergraduate guide: the school sends the record, or you send it stamped and sealed; the translation goes with it (source).
Graduate applicants upload the native-language transcript and the certified translation, front and back, in the online application, then have the officials mailed after admission (source).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For CSU that means we translate your records and diplomas; we cannot mail them for your school, attest them or apostille them.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my documents for Colorado State University?
CSU asks for a certified literal English translation and does not say who must make it (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.
Can my university email my transcript to the Graduate School?
Not as an official record. The Graduate School says emailed transcripts are not official, even from the issuing institution (source).
Does CSU accept apostilled or notarized copies?
For graduate admission, copies attested by the university or apostilled are accepted; notarized copies are not (source).
Do I need a credential evaluation?
CSU’s admissions pages do not ask for one. Transfer credit is evaluated by CSU after you are admitted.
I am a US resident with a degree from abroad. Do I need a translation?
Yes. Send the original official transcript plus a certified translation if it is not in English (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
