University of Maryland, Baltimore County: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
UMBC asks international transfer applicants for a certified English translation of documents in other languages, without saying who must make it, plus a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member for university work abroad. University of Maryland, Baltimore County accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Graduate applicants send an English-language and a native-language transcript from each institution, or an optional WES ICAP evaluation instead; evaluations are not something we provide.
NACES for transfer
Course-by-course, with the original transcript attached.
English and native
Graduate files need both versions from each school.
WES ICAP optional
For graduate admission it can replace official transcripts.
UMBC requirements at a glance
| What UMBC asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | Certified English translation for documents in other languages (transfer page). The first-year page does not mention translation (source). |
| Who may translate | Not stated. |
| Evaluation (transfer) | Required for university study abroad: course-by-course from a NACES service; UMBC recommends ECE, IEE, WES and TEC, several with custom UMBC applications at a discount (source). |
| Evaluation (graduate) | Optional: an official WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation sent by WES replaces official transcripts (source). |
| Graduate transcripts | An official English-language transcript and a native-language transcript from each institution, listing subjects, grades and class rank (source). |
| Upload | Graduate applicants upload one unofficial PDF per institution; officials are required if admitted (source). First-year transcripts come from the counselor through the Common App or by mail (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. UMBC's international transfer page says documents in other languages "must be accompanied by a certified English translation" and does not restrict who makes it (source); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Transfer: translation and evaluation together
If you studied at a university outside the US, UMBC asks for two things: a certified English translation of any document not in English, and a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member service. Every evaluation must come with the original transcript the service used (source). UMBC recommends ECE, IEE, WES and The Evaluation Company, and several of them have built UMBC-specific applications that select the right report at a discounted rate, reached only through UMBC's links.
Evaluation agencies set their own translation rules; WES, for example, sets its own rules for translations of documents not in English. See translation for WES. Transfer applicants choosing mechanical, chemical or computer engineering, engineering undecided or computer science also have their transcripts reviewed by the College of Engineering and Information Technology for program eligibility (source).
Graduate School: two transcripts, or WES ICAP
UMBC's Graduate School asks international applicants for an official English-language transcript and a native-language transcript from each post-secondary institution, each listing subjects, grades or marks, and rank in class (source). The page does not say who prepares the English version. If your university issues records only in its own language, ask the Graduate School whether a certified translation will serve as the English version.
The alternative is an official WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation, sent by WES directly to the Graduate School; it is optional and counts as the official transcripts for admission. For the review itself you upload one unofficial PDF per institution, and your bachelor's institution's transcript must be in the file (source).
Where UMBC's pages differ
The two offices name different evaluation agencies for coursework abroad. Undergraduate Admissions recommends ECE, IEE, WES and TEC and accepts any NACES service (transfer page); the Registrar's transcript page says translated official transcripts must come with a course-by-course evaluation from ECE, Educational Perspectives, Foreign Credential Services of America or WES (Registrar). We have not resolved this; ECE and WES appear on both lists.
Documents applicants usually translate
- University transcripts or mark sheets from every institution attended
- Degree certificates
- Secondary school transcripts and leaving exam results
- Native-language transcripts that accompany the English version, for graduate applicants
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UMBC
Undergraduates apply on the Common App; first-year transcripts come from the counselor, and transfer applicants send the NACES evaluation with the original transcript and its certified translation (first-year, transfer).
Graduate applicants upload unofficial transcripts in the online application and send officials, or a WES ICAP evaluation, if admitted (source, international).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UMBC that means we translate your records; the NACES course-by-course evaluation for transfer, or the WES ICAP report for graduate admission, comes from the evaluation agency.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my documents for UMBC?
UMBC asks for a certified English translation and does not say who must make it (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.
Do I need an evaluation as an international transfer student?
Yes, a NACES course-by-course evaluation for university work abroad, sent with the original transcript (source).
Which agency should I use?
Admissions recommends ECE, IEE, WES or TEC; the Registrar lists ECE, Educational Perspectives, FCSA or WES (admissions, Registrar). ECE and WES are on both.
Is WES required for graduate admission?
No. WES ICAP is optional and can stand in for official transcripts (source).
Can I upload unofficial transcripts for graduate review?
Yes, one PDF per institution; officials are needed if you are admitted (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
