University of Maryland, College Park: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

The University of Maryland, College Park asks for every high school and college transcript in its native language together with a certified English translation, and its Graduate School asks for a literal, certified translation issued by the institution or by a professional translating service. The University of Maryland, College Park accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Undergraduate applicants with any college work abroad also need a course-by-course evaluation from Educational Credential Evaluators or Josef Silny & Associates, which we do not provide; the Graduate School, by contrast, asks applicants not to send evaluations.

University of Maryland, College Park: requirements for documents in another language
What UMD asks for
Translation (undergraduate)High school and college transcripts in the native language, sent with the certified English translation; the same applies to national exam certificates (source, submitting documents).
Who may translate (undergraduate)Not specified: the pages ask for a certified translation without naming who makes it (source).
Evaluation (undergraduate)Required for all post-secondary credentials from outside the US, from ECE or Josef Silny only, course-by-course with GPA; not required for secondary records (source).
Translation (graduate)Literal and certified, issued by your institution or a professional translating service; no other translations are accepted (source, apply now).
Evaluation (graduate)Do not send WES or other external evaluations (source); the Graduate School asks for one only if a document's authenticity is in doubt (source).
Delivery (undergraduate)Official transcripts come directly from the school, electronically or by mail; they cannot be emailed or faxed (source).
Official records (graduate)Scans for review; once admitted, official transcripts in a sealed envelope and an attested degree certificate during your first semester (source).
DeadlinesNovember 1 non-binding early action for first-year applicants, with a decision by February 1 (source).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. Undergraduate Admissions asks for a certified English translation and does not restrict who makes it (international applicants), and the Graduate School accepts translations from a professional translating service (transcripts FAQ); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets both. Undergraduate: two agencies for college work, none for high school

UMD's undergraduate office reads foreign secondary records itself: you send transcripts for the equivalent of US grades 9 to 12, in the native language with the certified English translation, plus results and completion certificates of national exams such as GCSE/GCE, CBSE, CXC/CSEC and WAEC where they apply (source). No evaluation is needed for them.

Any college or university work done outside the US is different. Every applicant with such credentials, first-year or transfer, needs a third-party evaluation from one of only two agencies, Educational Credential Evaluators or Josef Silny & Associates, received by the application deadline (source). UMD asks for a course-by-course report with a GPA calculation and upper-division course designation (from Josef Silny, the designation applies once you have more than a year of study). Both agency listings include the original transcript and a certified English translation, so order the translation before you start the evaluation. Transfer applicants with fewer than 30 semester or 45 quarter hours also send their high school transcripts.

The Graduate School: literal translations and no evaluations

The Graduate School works the other way around. It asks applicants not to send external credential evaluations such as WES (source) and reviews the records itself, so the translation is what it reads. Its transcripts FAQ accepts only translations issued by the institution or by a professional translating service, and they must be literal (source). Transcripts should show every course and grade, the grading scale and your final average; if the transcript does not say the degree was conferred, add the degree certificate.

Country rules are specific. A degree from China needs both the graduation diploma and the degree certificate, each with a certified, literal English translation; from India, the final degree certificate, or the provisional one if you graduated within the last year and the final has not been issued (source). Everything goes into the TerpEngage application as one combined, legible PDF of no more than 4MB, original-language records and translations together. Admitted students then provide official transcripts in sealed envelopes, an attested degree certificate and certified, literal translations during their first semester (source, international admissions).

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to UMD

Undergraduate applicants apply through the Common App or ApplyWeb (transfers through ApplyWeb only). Schools send official transcripts electronically or by mail, never by email or fax, in the native language with the certified translation (source). The pages do not say whether the translation must come in the school's own mailing; if your school will not send it, ask international-admissions@umd.edu how to submit it.

Graduate applicants upload the scans and their translations in TerpEngage as one combined, legible PDF of up to 4MB (source), and send official records after admission, as the decision letter's conditions of enrollment describe.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. At UMD that means the course-by-course evaluation of college work abroad comes from ECE or Josef Silny, not from us; we translate the transcripts that UMD and the agency both ask for.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my transcripts for UMD undergraduate admission?

UMD asks for a certified English translation and does not limit who may make it (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation.

Which evaluation agency does UMD accept?

Only Educational Credential Evaluators or Josef Silny & Associates, course-by-course, and only for college or university credentials; high school records need no evaluation (source).

Should I send a WES evaluation to the UMD Graduate School?

No. The Graduate School asks applicants not to submit external international credential evaluations (source).

Who may translate for the UMD Graduate School?

Only your institution or a professional translating service, and the translation must be literal (source).

My degree is from China. What do I translate?

Both the graduation diploma and the degree certificate, each with a certified, literal English translation, along with your transcript (source).

Can my school email my transcripts to UMD undergraduate admissions?

No. Official transcripts must come through an electronic transcript service or by mail; email and fax are not accepted (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
