Sacred Heart University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Sacred Heart University's international pages ask for a translation mainly for one document: the course description or syllabus of each foreign university course you want credit for, which must be in English as a certified translation or as an English version issued by the university. Sacred Heart University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. The course-by-course evaluation that goes with it comes from WES, ECE, FIS, TEC or another NACES member, which we do not provide.

What Sacred Heart asks for
TranslationA certified translation of each foreign university course description or syllabus, or an English version issued by the university (source).
Who may translateAn official translator (transfer credit page); the application instructions do not add a further restriction.
Secondary school recordsOfficial scholastic records from every school attended are required; the pages we read do not state a translation rule for them (source).
Evaluation for creditCourse-by-course, from WES, ECE, FIS, TEC or another NACES member, only if you want academic credit for foreign university work (source).
Copies or originalsFax or email copies are working documents only; Sacred Heart accepts originals or photocopies bearing a school seal and signature (source).
Graduate programsCourse-by-course report preferred but optional for most programs; required for the Master of Public Health and the MS in exercise and sport science (source).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. Sacred Heart accepts a "certified translation of the course description/syllabus" (application instructions) and says translated material must be done by an official translator (transfer credit evaluation), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. The document Sacred Heart wants translated is the syllabus

Most universities ask for translations of transcripts. Sacred Heart's international pages focus on something else: if you want credit for courses taken at a foreign university, you need a course-by-course evaluation and, in addition, an official description of each course in English (application instructions). The international transfer credit page explains what happens without it: most international credits come in as electives unless an English syllabus or description is provided, and a translated one must be done by an official translator.

Course descriptions are long. A full syllabus can run to several pages per course, so translate only the courses you want credit for, and keep the course code and title exactly as on the transcript so the Registrar can match them. We keep the original title next to the English one.

The credit evaluation itself is done by the Sacred Heart Registrar after admission (source). Up to 66 credits from a two-year college and up to 90 from a four-year institution may count.

Where Sacred Heart's pages differ

The undergraduate application instructions accept a course-by-course evaluation from WES, ECE, FIS, TEC or any NACES member; the international transfer credit page asks for copies of the WES evaluation. For graduate applicants, the graduate international page says international students must have their transcripts evaluated, with a note that not all programs require it, while the graduate application instructions call the report preferred but optional for most programs. We have not resolved these differences; ask the international admissions office which report your program needs.

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to Sacred Heart

After you submit the Common App or the SHU International Application, Sacred Heart tells you how to upload documents (source). Upload the certified translation of each course description with the original-language version, and send the course-by-course evaluation from the agency.

Remember that fax or email copies count only as working documents; official records must be originals or sealed and signed photocopies.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Sacred Heart that means we translate your course descriptions, syllabi and records; the course-by-course evaluation comes from WES, ECE, FIS, TEC or another NACES member.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my course syllabi translated for Sacred Heart?

If you want credit for foreign university courses, yes: Sacred Heart needs an English description of each course, either a certified translation or an English version from your university (source). Without it, most courses come in as electives (source).

Who can translate my course descriptions?

An official translator (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets that.

Which evaluation agency should I use?

The application instructions list WES, ECE, FIS, TEC or any NACES member; the transfer credit page mentions WES. Confirm with international admissions (source).

Can I email my documents?

You can, but Sacred Heart treats faxed or emailed materials as unofficial working documents (source).

Do graduate applicants need an evaluation?

For most programs it is preferred but optional; it is required for the Master of Public Health and the MS in exercise and sport science (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
