Montgomery College: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
Montgomery College, in Maryland, asks F-1 student visa (I-20) applicants to prove high school or college-level completion with documents in English; a translated document must be sent as the original or a certified copy of the native-language version together with a certified English translation. The college does not say who must certify it, but it links a list of commercial translation services, without endorsing any, and suggests embassies. Montgomery College accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. No translation rule was found for residents and other non-F-1 applicants; foreign college credit, for any student, needs a course-by-course evaluation from WES, ECE or Josef Silny, which we do not provide.
F-1/I-20 rule
The translation rule sits in the student visa process.
No postal mail
Documents go through a Dropbox link from a coordinator.
WES, ECE or JSA
Only these three for foreign college credit, course-by-course.
Montgomery College requirements at a glance
| What Montgomery College asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | F-1/I-20 applicants: all documents in English; if translated, the original or a certified copy of the native-language version together with a certified English translation (source). |
| Who may translate | Not stated. Montgomery College links a list of local translation services, which it says it makes no explicit recommendation for, and suggests contacting your embassy (source). |
| Proof of completion | An original or certified copy of a high school diploma or equivalent, or college-level proof such as a university degree; you may also be asked for a credential evaluation (source). |
| High school equivalency evaluation | When asked, a document-by-document evaluation showing US high school diploma equivalency (source). |
| Foreign college credit | A course-by-course evaluation by WES, ECE or Josef Silny & Associates, sent by the service to Records and Registration; AACRAO reports only if completed before August 15, 2016 (source). |
| Where to send | Apply online as an F-1/I-20 applicant; an international coordinator then sends a Dropbox link for your documents. Postal mail is currently not accepted (source). |
| I-20 deadlines | Fall: June 1 (August 1 for I-20 transfers). Spring: October 1 (December 1 for I-20 transfers). No I-20s for summer (I-20 process). |
| Residents and US applicants | Montgomery College is open-admission, and no translation rule was found on its pages for non-F-1 applicants; the evaluation rule for foreign college credit applies to any admitted, degree-seeking student (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. The I-20 page asks for a certified English translation without restricting who certifies it (student visas) and links a list of commercial translation services that Montgomery College says it does not specifically recommend (translation services list), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. F-1 applicants versus residents: what each one needs
The translation rule appears in the F-1 student visa process. To get an I-20, you prove high school or college-level completion with documents in English, and if a document is translated you send the original or a certified copy of the native-language version together with a certified English translation (source). The original should be what you send unless the International Coordinator's office agrees otherwise, and you should keep the originals of anything you submit. Montgomery College may also ask for a credential evaluation in addition to the diploma, and its I-20 process notes that unclear documents lead to an evaluation for transfer of credit (source).
Residents, permanent residents and other applicants who do not need an I-20 enter through open admission, and we found no translation rule for them on the college's pages. They meet a translation requirement only if they want credit for foreign college work: then the evaluation agency (WES, ECE or Josef Silny) reads the records, and each agency sets its own rule for translations.
Foreign credit: three agencies, and the four-year school you aim for
Credit earned at non-US colleges must be evaluated course-by-course by World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators or Josef Silny & Associates, and Montgomery College may still ask for course descriptions (source). You must be admitted, degree-seeking and have a declared major, and at most 45 transfer credits count toward a degree. The college advises using the same evaluator as the four-year school you plan to transfer to: ECE or Josef Silny for the University of Maryland, College Park; WES for UMGC.
Credit appears about four to six weeks after Records and Registration receives the official evaluation (source). A document-by-document evaluation is the other type, used only to show high school equivalency.
Where Montgomery College's pages differ
The current Student Visas page says originals received by the International Coordinators are kept in your file to be returned to you, while the linked Application Process for a Form I-20 PDF says submitted originals may not be returned unless brought in person. The PDF also tells applicants to mail documents to campus offices, while the web page says postal mail is currently not accepted and documents go through a Dropbox link. We have not resolved those differences; the coordinator who sends your Dropbox link can confirm what to send and how.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school diploma or completion certificate, for the I-20
- University degree, or a transcript showing 12 or more university credits
- University transcripts, for the WES, ECE or Josef Silny evaluation
- Bank statements and sponsor letters for the evidence of financial support
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to Montgomery College
Submit the online application as an F-1/I-20 applicant. After your application is reviewed, an international coordinator emails a Dropbox link, and you upload the native-language document and its certified English translation there; postal mail is currently not accepted (source).
For foreign college credit, the evaluation service, not you, sends the official report to Records and Registration (source).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Montgomery College that means we translate your diploma and transcripts; the document-by-document or course-by-course evaluation comes from WES, ECE or Josef Silny.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Does Montgomery College need my diploma translated for an I-20?
Yes. Documents must be in English; if translated, send the original or a certified copy of the native-language document together with a certified English translation (source).
Which translation service should I use for Montgomery College?
The college links a list of local translation services and suggests your embassy, but recommends none of them and does not say who must certify the translation (source). A certified translation from a professional service meets the wording of the rule.
I am a resident, not on an F-1 visa. Do I need a certified translation?
We found no translation rule for non-F-1 applicants on Montgomery College's pages; the certified-translation rule is on the F-1/I-20 page. If you want credit for foreign college work, you need a WES, ECE or Josef Silny evaluation (source), and that agency has its own translation rule.
Do I need a WES evaluation to transfer foreign college credits to Montgomery College?
You need a course-by-course evaluation from WES, ECE or Josef Silny & Associates, and you may also be asked for course descriptions (source).
Can I mail my translated documents to Montgomery College?
Not at present. The I-20 page says postal mail is not accepted, and an international coordinator sends a Dropbox link for uploads (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
