How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

Marquette University says materials not issued in English must have an official, exact English language translation, and does not say who must make it.

Marquette University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

College or university work abroad also needs an official credential evaluation with US credit hours and a GPA from one of six named agencies, which we do not provide, and transfer credit is reviewed only with syllabi or course descriptions translated into English.

Marquette at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

Marquette's Office of International Education asks for "an official, exact English language translation" of materials not issued in English without restricting who makes it (application materials), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Worth knowing about Marquette

Official and exact

Any material not issued in English needs a translation.

Six named agencies

For each college or university attended abroad.

Syllabi in English

Transfer credit needs translated course descriptions.

Marquette requirements in detail

Translation

Materials not issued in English must have an official, exact English language translation (Required application materials (Office of International Education, marquette.edu)).

Who may translate

Not stated; the page names no translator.

College work abroad

Official credential evaluation by ECE, WES, The Evaluation Company, Educational Perspectives, Scholaro or One Earth, with US credit hours, a calculated GPA and a verified copy of the transcript, for each institution; sent by the agency (Required application materials (Office of International Education, marquette.edu)).

China

Chinese university transcripts also need a CHESICC Transcript Verification Report for the same transcript (Required application materials (Office of International Education, marquette.edu)).

Transfer credit

After admission, with official transcripts and syllabi or course descriptions for each subject translated into English, uploaded to your application account (Credit transfer for international students).

What counts as official

A fresh ink printing, signature, stamp or raised seal; if your school issues only one original, a copy certified by the appropriate official (Required application materials (Office of International Education, marquette.edu)).

Unofficial first

Upload unofficial transcripts and exam results; official ones must arrive before the I-20 is issued and before enrollment (Required application materials (Office of International Education, marquette.edu)).

Graduate applicants

Some programs require a general evaluation with cumulative GPA or a course-by-course evaluation from ECE, Educational Perspectives, One Earth, TEC or WES; an unofficial copy completes the application (Graduate School: application instructions).

Official, exact, and for every document

Marquette's definitions section words the translation rule for all materials not issued in English, not only transcripts; read literally, that covers secondary transcripts and mark sheets, exam certificates such as the Bachillerato, the Maturity Certificate or the Chinese graduation certificate, and the bank statements and sponsor documents uploaded for the I-20 (Required application materials (Office of International Education, marquette.edu)).

"Exact" leaves no room for a summary: every course, mark and note on the original has to appear in English.

Marquette is equally precise about the original.

An official document has a fresh ink printing, signature, stamp or raised seal certifying its content; photocopies without an original certification, scans, email attachments and faxes are not official.

If your school issues only one original, you may send a copy with the certification placed on it by the appropriate official (Required application materials (Office of International Education, marquette.edu)).

College credit: an evaluation, then translated syllabi

For admission, each college or university you attended abroad needs an official credential evaluation that includes US credit hours, a calculated GPA and a verified copy of the official transcript, sent directly by the agency (Required application materials (Office of International Education, marquette.edu)).

If you use The Evaluation Company, Marquette asks you to use the custom application TEC built for it, at a discounted rate.

Transcripts from Chinese universities also need a CHESICC verification report of the same transcript you send Marquette.

Credit is decided only after admission, and only with syllabi or course descriptions for each subject translated into English and uploaded to your application account (Credit transfer for international students); admitted students are asked to send English translations of all related course descriptions with their official records by the first day of classes (Next steps for admitted international undergraduates). Course descriptions are often long, so order their translation early.

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

WES wants a word-for-word translation by a professional translator and refuses translations by applicants (WES).

ECE accepts any complete, word-for-word translation, including your own, and sells an $85 waiver under which it translates for its report only (ECE).

Scholaro accepts documents in their native language or with a certified translation (Scholaro); One Earth usually lets you translate your own records (One Earth).

The Evaluation Company takes outside translations only from translators certified by the American Translators Association, or sells its own after your evaluation application is complete (TEC). If you use TEC's Marquette application, see the ATA section below.

Uploading the translation to Marquette

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for Marquette, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For Marquette that means we translate your records, certificates and course descriptions; the evaluation with US credit hours and GPA comes from ECE, WES, TEC, Educational Perspectives, Scholaro or One Earth, and the CHESICC report from CHESICC.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Yes, on request, for example if you use The Evaluation Company.
