University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee asks international applicants to include an English translation with any transcript not issued in English; graduate applicants include the original version and the translation, and no page says who must translate. University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. You upload copies to apply and show the originals at the international office on arrival; UWM evaluates foreign records itself, so no outside evaluation is asked for.
Upload only
Nothing is mailed to UWM while you apply.
Scanned, not kept
ISSS scans your originals in Garland Hall 138 and returns them.
Country table
Minimum credential and years required, country by country.
UWM requirements at a glance
| What UWM asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | Bachelor's applicants include an English translation of any transcript not issued in English; master's and PhD applicants include the original version and an English translation (bachelor's, graduate). |
| Who may translate | Not stated on any UWM page we read. |
| Evaluation | None requested. The Center for International Education determines whether a foreign degree equals a US bachelor's (Graduate School). |
| Where to upload | Copies of transcripts and degree certificates go into the online application; there is no need to mail anything while you apply (source). |
| Originals | Admitted students bring the originals on arrival; final transcripts also need an English translation if not in English (final transcripts). |
| Timing | You cannot register for the following term until UWM receives your final transcripts; PAWS shows which ones (source). |
| High school records | Bachelor's applicants only; graduate applicants should not send them (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. UWM's bachelor's and graduate application pages ask you to "include an English translation" without restricting who makes it (bachelor's application, graduate application); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Apply with copies, show the originals in Garland Hall
UWM keeps the application paperless. Bachelor's applicants upload copies of all secondary and university transcripts and degree certificates; master's and PhD applicants upload university records only. Nothing is mailed during the application (bachelor's, graduate).
Admission depends on final, official transcripts. The simplest way is to bring the original to International Student and Scholar Services in Garland Hall 138, open weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; staff scan it and you keep it. You can also leave it in the Garland 125 mail slot, have your school email it to isss@uwm.edu, or have it mailed. Transcripts not in English should come with the English translation (final transcripts).
The country table, and where UWM's pages differ
UWM's credentials by country table lists, for each country, the minimum secondary credential and the years your records must cover: for Mexico, the Certificado de Bachillerato with years 9 to 12; for Brazil, the certificate of completion of secondary school; for India, Class 10 and Class 12 results. For some countries it asks for records in English, such as Japan, South Korea, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
For many others, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, China and Vietnam, the table describes records "issued in" the local language "and English", issued by the school with its stamp and signature, accompanied by an official English translation. The application pages ask only for an English translation (source). We have not resolved that difference for you. A certified translation from a professional service satisfies the application pages; if your school issues an English version of its own, include it too, and ask the Center for International Education if you are unsure.
Transfer students
UWM reviews foreign university courses and grants credit where it finds a reasonable equivalent, and recommends course descriptions that detail what you learned (source). Foreign institutions must be recognized by their ministry of education or its equivalent (transfer admission). Graduate students need their program's permission to transfer courses.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school subject and grade reports and the completion certificate (bachelor's applicants)
- National examination results
- University transcripts and degree certificates
- Course descriptions, for transfer credit
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UWM
Upload the original-language transcript and its English translation together in the online application; graduate applicants include both versions (source).
After admission, bring the originals, with the translations, to ISSS in Garland Hall 138, or use one of the other delivery options on the final transcripts page.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UWM that means we translate your records and course descriptions; an English version issued by your school, where the country table mentions one, comes from your school.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my transcripts for UWM?
UWM asks for an English translation and does not say who must make it (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.
Do I mail my documents when I apply to UWM?
No. You upload copies; admitted students bring the originals on arrival (source).
How do I hand in my final transcripts?
Bring the original to ISSS in Garland Hall 138, where it is scanned and returned, drop it in the Garland 125 mail slot, or have your school email it to isss@uwm.edu or mail it (source).
Do graduate applicants send high school transcripts?
No. Master's and PhD applicants send university records only, with the original and an English translation (source).
Does UWM require a WES evaluation?
No outside evaluation is requested on these pages; the Center for International Education decides degree equivalency (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
