How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

Kean University asks international first-year applicants for a course-by-course evaluation, with GPA, of their secondary school transcript, and international transfers for one of their university transcript, from a NACES member agency; graduate applicants may be asked for one.

Kean's evaluation agencies, such as WES and ECE, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

You order the translation first and send it to the agency with your records; if you choose The Evaluation Company or Global Credential Evaluators, they take outside translations only from ATA-certified translators, which eVerbary can assign on request.

Worth knowing about Kean

Evaluation from day one

Even first-year applicants need a course-by-course report.

IEE and TEC preferred

Five-day evaluations at a discounted rate.

Mailed by the agency

The official evaluation goes from the agency to Admissions.

Kean requirements in detail

Translation of academic records

Kean publishes no translation rule of its own; foreign records go through a NACES evaluation, and the agency sets the translation rule.

Who may translate

Set by the evaluation agency; see "What each evaluation agency asks for the translation" below.

First-year applicants

A course-by-course evaluation, including GPA, of the official secondary school transcript or mark sheet, from a NACES member (International freshmen applicants).

Transfer applicants

A course-by-course evaluation of the official university transcript from a NACES member; US college transcripts go electronically to UGProcessing@kean.edu (International transfer applicant).

Graduate applicants

Official transcripts from all institutions; Admissions reviews them and may then require a course-by-course evaluation (International graduate applicants). Physician Assistant Studies requires a WES course-by-course evaluation (Physician Assistant Studies admission requirements).

Agencies

Preferred, with five-day service at a discounted rate: IEE and TEC, through Kean's own application links. Also approved: WES, Global Credential Evaluators, ECE and Josef Silny & Associates (International freshmen applicants).

How the evaluation arrives

The NACES agency mails an official copy of the evaluation to Kean's Office of Admissions (Submit application items).

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

IEE does not accept translations made by the applicant, a notary public or an uncertified translator, and generally accepts translations from a university or embassy in your home country (IEE).

WES asks for an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator (WES).

ECE accepts a complete, literal, word-for-word translation, including one you make yourself, or translates for its report only under an $85 waiver (ECE).

The Evaluation Company takes outside translations only from ATA-certified translators, or translates in-house after your evaluation application is complete (TEC).

Global Credential Evaluators accepts translations from the issuing university, the Ministry of Education or an ATA-certified translator (GCE).

Josef Silny asks that translations made in the US come from ATA-certified translators (JS&A). If you choose one of these, see the ATA section below.

An evaluation even for a high school transcript

Many universities read foreign secondary records themselves.

Kean does not: international first-year applicants must send a course-by-course evaluation, including a GPA, of the official high school transcript or mark sheet (International freshmen applicants).

The agency needs the translation before it can evaluate a record that is not in English, so the order is translation, then evaluation, then the agency mails the report to Kean (Submit application items).

Transfers follow the same pattern for their university transcripts (International transfer applicant).

Graduate applicants send official transcripts first, and Admissions decides whether it needs an evaluation (International graduate applicants); Physician Assistant Studies is the exception that always asks for WES (Physician Assistant Studies admission requirements).

Preferred vendors and their speed

Kean links its own application forms for IEE and The Evaluation Company, whose evaluations are guaranteed within five days of receiving your documentation, at a discounted rate (International transfer applicant).

The five days start when the agency has everything, including the translation, so having it ready before you apply to the agency saves time.

TEC's rule on translators (ATA-certified only) is stricter than IEE's (certified translators).

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for Kean, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For Kean that means we translate your transcripts and diplomas; the NACES course-by-course evaluation is ordered by you from the agency after the translation.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kean need a translation of my transcripts?

Kean asks for a NACES course-by-course evaluation (International freshmen applicants); the agency needs the translation under its own rules. WES, for example, wants one from a professional translator (WES: translation requirements).

Do I need an evaluation as a first-year applicant?

Yes. International first-year applicants submit a course-by-course evaluation, including GPA, of their secondary school transcript or mark sheet (International freshmen applicants).

Which agency should I choose?

Any NACES member. Kean prefers IEE and TEC (five-day, discounted) and also lists WES, Global Credential Evaluators, ECE and Josef Silny (International freshmen applicants). Physician Assistant Studies requires WES (Physician Assistant Studies admission requirements).

Do graduate applicants always need an evaluation?

Not always: Admissions reviews your official transcripts and may require a course-by-course evaluation (International graduate applicants).

Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for Kean?

Yes, on request, for example if you use The Evaluation Company or Global Credential Evaluators. Ask for a free quote and write in the notes which agency the translation is for and that it needs a translator individually certified by ATA. ATA certifies Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) and Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page) into English; no other languages.

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
