Houston Christian University requires every foreign transcript to go first to an evaluation agency for a detailed, course-by-course evaluation, and does not accept non-evaluated international transcripts sent by applicants; it names SDR Educational Consultants, The Evaluation Company, WES and Atlas Credential Evaluations.
HCU's evaluation agencies, such as WES and SDR, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.
You order the translation first and send it to the agency with your records; the agency writes the evaluation, which we do not provide.

Sample translation: a Brazilian university transcript
This is what an order looks like when it is delivered, with invented names, school and numbers. The original in Portuguese sits next to our English translation, and the PDF starts with the signed certification page. Bracketed text in the translation is a translator's note: each abbreviation is spelled out the first time it appears, and the layout follows the original line for line, so an admissions officer or a credential evaluator can match it without guessing.

What to notice
- CPF, RG, MEC, D.O.U., CH, CR and ENADE are spelled out in brackets the first time they appear, and only then.
- Status codes (AP, RM, RF, AE) are explained on first use, so a course failed and retaken the next term reads correctly.
- Grades, decimal commas and dates stay exactly as printed; the date format is noted once. Converting grades is the evaluator's job.
- Terms, rows and columns follow the original line for line, so each course can be matched at a glance.

HCU requirements in detail
Translation
HCU states no translation rule of its own; foreign transcripts reach it only through an evaluation (Foreign transcript evaluations). The translation is what the agency needs before evaluating a document not in English.
Who may translate
Set by the agency: WES wants a professional translator; SDR a certified translator; The Evaluation Company an ATA-certified one.
Evaluation
Detailed, course-by-course evaluation for a US equivalency, sent by the agency to HCU (Foreign transcript evaluations).
Agencies named
SDR Educational Consultants, The Evaluation Company, World Education Services, Atlas Credential Evaluations; more are available (Foreign transcript evaluations).
Exemption
International American schools approved by a US accrediting agency need no evaluation (Foreign transcript evaluations).
High school
Transcripts from at least grades 9-11; regional test scores such as WAEC are not accepted; HCU asks for an evaluation if it cannot read the transcript directly (future students).
Transfer credit
College classes from abroad transfer case by case; with under 30 hours you may also need a high school evaluation (Foreign transcript evaluations).
What each evaluation agency asks for the translation
HCU lists four commonly used agencies, and each sets its own translation rule.
WES asks for an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator, such as a certified translation agency, does not accept translations made by applicants and does not translate documents itself.
SDR Educational Consultants, in Houston, accepts translations by a certified translator or translates in-house.
The Evaluation Company asks that an outside translator be certified by the American Translators Association; otherwise its own team translates after your evaluation application is complete.
If you choose TEC, eVerbary can assign a translator individually certified by ATA for the languages ATA certifies: ask for a free quote and say it is for TEC and HCU.
Atlas Credential Evaluations is also listed; check its own rule before ordering.
Where HCU's pages differ on high school records
The transcript evaluations page says all foreign transcripts must first be evaluated and that non-evaluated transcripts sent by applicants are not accepted (transcript evaluations).
The Future Students page says that if the admissions department cannot evaluate a high school transcript directly it will ask for a foreign transcript evaluation, which suggests HCU may read some high school records itself (future students).
Planning for an evaluation is the safer course; either way, translate the high school diploma and grades 9 to 11 at least.
Need a certified translation for HCU?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- High school transcripts, at least grades 9 to 11
- High school diploma or leaving certificate
- College or university transcripts
- Degree certificates, for graduate applicants
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to HCU
The translation goes to the evaluation agency with your records, not to HCU; the agency sends the course-by-course evaluation to HCU, and you can ask the international office about its status after two weeks (Foreign transcript evaluations).
If you need a translator certified by ATA
Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:
$34.95 per page
Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian
$44.95 per page
Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian
To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for HCU, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).
We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.
For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For HCU that means we translate your records for the agency; the course-by-course evaluation is ordered by you, for example from WES or SDR.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send my foreign transcript directly to HCU?
No. HCU does not accept non-evaluated international transcripts sent by applicants; they go to an evaluation agency first (Foreign transcript evaluations).
Which evaluation agencies does HCU name?
SDR Educational Consultants, The Evaluation Company, WES and Atlas Credential Evaluations; more are available (Foreign transcript evaluations).
How much does the evaluation cost?
HCU says evaluations cost about $170 on average (Foreign transcript evaluations). The translation is a separate cost.
Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for The Evaluation Company?
Yes, on request through a free quote, for Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) or Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page). ATA certifies no other languages into English.
Does HCU accept WAEC results instead of transcripts?
No. HCU cannot accept regional test scores such as WAEC in place of high school transcripts (Future international students).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
