Bergen Community College: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Bergen Community College tells F-1 applicants that their official grades and proof of graduation must be translated into English by a certified translator, and its application packets also ask for translated birth and marriage certificates for dependents. Bergen Community College accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Residents with a foreign diploma need a NACES document-by-document evaluation for financial aid and some programs, and credit for foreign college work needs a NACES course-by-course evaluation; we translate, we do not evaluate.

F-1 applicants and New Jersey residents follow different rules

If you apply for an I-20, Bergen's International Student Center asks for an official copy of your grades and proof of graduation, translated by a certified translator, and for nothing from an evaluation agency unless you already hold a foreign degree (FAQ, packet). There is no application fee and no SAT, TOEFL or IELTS requirement; placement tests come after admission.

If you live in New Jersey and finished school abroad, the translation is not what decides most cases. Bergen's 2024-25 catalog says students may self-certify high school graduation (catalog). But to apply for financial aid you need a document-by-document evaluation of the foreign diploma from a current NACES member, received unopened from the agency (flyer), and NJ STARS, Health Professions and Athletics may require the diploma, evaluated the same way (source). The agency, not Bergen, sets the rule for the translation it receives with your documents.

What Bergen does with foreign college credit

Credit rests only on the NACES course-by-course evaluation, delivered in a sealed envelope from the agency to the Transfer Evaluator, and you must first be admitted to a degree or certificate program (source). The evaluation must say the credits come from an accredited institution, and if it shows no grades the course cannot transfer.

Some courses are excluded whatever the evaluation says: courses that pertain to your country, such as law or accounting, and English courses unless English was your field of study. Science, math and technical courses may also need course outlines (source). It is worth translating syllabi only for those.

Where Bergen's pages differ

The current FAQ and the 2026 F-1 packets ask for translated proof of graduation and an evaluation only for a foreign degree (FAQ, packet). Bergen's archived 2024-25 catalog says F-1 visa-holders need official high school transcripts and that foreign secondary credentials must be evaluated by WES or another NACES member (catalog). Separately, the evaluation flyer "recommends" a course-by-course evaluation for foreign college credit (flyer), while the transfer page says you must have one to receive credit (source). We have not resolved these differences; ask the International Student Center which applies to you.

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to Bergen

F-1 applicants send the translated documents with the rest of the packet as PDF files by email, in person at the International Student Center (Room SC-110), or by mail to 400 Paramus Road (FAQ). The same checklist applies to F-1 students transferring from another US school (transfer packet).

Evaluations for credit or financial aid do not go through you: the NACES member mails them sealed to the Transfer Evaluator (flyer, transfer page).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Bergen that means we translate your grades, diploma and family documents; the NACES document-by-document or course-by-course evaluation comes from the agency.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my documents for Bergen's international application?

A certified translator, according to the International Student FAQ (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.

Can I email my documents?

Yes. The International Student Center accepts the packet as PDF files by email, in person at Room SC-110, or by mail (source).

I live in New Jersey and finished high school abroad. Do I need an evaluation?

For financial aid, yes: a NACES document-by-document evaluation of the diploma (source). NJ STARS, Health Professions and Athletics may also require it (source).

Will my foreign university credits transfer?

Only through a NACES course-by-course evaluation sent sealed to the Transfer Evaluator. Country-specific courses such as law or accounting, and English courses outside an English major, are not accepted, and courses without grades cannot transfer (source).

Do my family members' documents need a translation?

Yes, for dependents on F-2 visas the packet asks for copies of marriage and birth certificates translated into English (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
