How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine publishes no translation rule of its own: it verifies identity, education and training through FCVS, and international graduates must hold a permanent ECFMG certificate, with FCVS obtaining their school and exam verification from ECFMG.

ECFMG accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary, word for word and never made by the applicant.

We translate; we do not build your FCVS profile, request ECFMG certification or take the Board's jurisprudence exam for you.

Maine BOLIM requirements in detail

Translation

No translation rule in the Board's license FAQ, MD license page or Chapter 1 rules (FAQ, Chapter 1).

Evaluation

International graduates must graduate from a school listed by the World Health Organization and obtain a permanent ECFMG certificate (License FAQ).

Who may translate (ECFMG)

A government official, a medical school official or a professional translation service; not the applicant (ECFMG: English translations).

FCVS

Unless the rule exempts them, all applicants verify core credentials through FCVS, which sends the Board a Physician Information Profile with certified copies (Chapter 1). For international graduates, FCVS obtains school and exam verification from ECFMG (License FAQ).

Training

36 months of ACGME-approved graduate medical education, ABMS certification, or a Board waiver for exceptional circumstances (License FAQ).

How to apply

FCVS profile, Uniform Application, jurisprudence exam, Maine addendum with fees, and an affidavit with a notarized photograph (License FAQ, MD license page).

ECFMG reads the translations, not the Board

Maine does not collect education records from applicants.

Its rules have FCVS verify the static credentials, such as identity, education and postgraduate training, and send the Board a non-interpretive profile with certified copies (Chapter 1).

For an international graduate, FCVS gets the medical school and exam verification from ECFMG (License FAQ), so the translation rule that governs your diploma and transcript is ECFMG's.

ECFMG asks for an English translation of any document not in English, word for word, prepared from the original or a copy of it, by a professional translation service or an official, with a certification statement, and uploaded together with the original-language document (ECFMG: English translations). It does not accept translations made by applicants.

Maine-specific steps

Beyond FCVS and the Uniform Application, Maine asks every applicant to pass its online jurisprudence examination on Maine medical law, to complete the State of Maine Addendum with the fees, and to submit an affidavit with a notarized photograph (License FAQ).

The jurisprudence exam needs a score of at least 75% and is repeated every other renewal cycle (MD license).

International graduates qualify with a permanent ECFMG certificate, passing all national licensing exams within the time limits, and 36 months of ACGME-approved training or ABMS certification; the Board may waive the 36 months in exceptional circumstances (License FAQ).

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
  • Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.

Submitting the translation to Maine BOLIM

  • Upload the translations with the original-language documents to ECFMG, following its instructions (ECFMG: English translations); FCVS then obtains the verification from ECFMG and sends its profile to the Board (License FAQ).

  • Items the Board asks for directly, such as the addendum and the affidavit with a notarized photograph, go to the Board as its FAQ describes (License FAQ).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.

For Maine that means we translate your records for ECFMG and FCVS; we do not open your FCVS profile, request ECFMG certification, or complete the addendum and jurisprudence exam.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
