Cyrillic records, and a country that changed name
Macedonian is written in Cyrillic, and civil records are extracts from the municipal registers carrying the ЕМБГ, the thirteen-digit personal number. Documents issued before 2019 name the country differently from documents issued after, because the state's official name changed. Both are genuine, and a file containing both is not inconsistent — we translate each as issued rather than harmonising them.
Records for anyone born before 1991 come from the Yugoslav period, and a person born elsewhere in the federation may have to obtain theirs from another country today.
