Catalan civil records, and two surnames
Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands issue civil records in Catalan through the Registre Civil, and Andorra issues in Catalan as its official language. As in the rest of Spain, a person carries two surnames — the father's then the mother's — and both are part of the legal name.
That is the part US forms break. A form with one surname box drops the second, and the person stops matching their own paperwork. We reproduce both, in the order the document gives them, and keep that consistent across the file. Catalan also joins some surnames with i, meaning "and", and that is part of the name too.
Catalan spelling, and what else we translate
Catalan uses accents, the ç, and the middle dot in l·l, which distinguishes it from a doubled l. Stripping them changes words and names, so we keep the spelling as issued.
