Interpretation is not translation

Interpretation is spoken and happens live; translation is written and happens beforehand. People order one when they needed the other more often than any other mistake we see, and the two are not interchangeable: an interpreter cannot hand you a signed document afterwards, and a certified translation cannot speak for you in a room.

If an office asked for something on paper with a certification attached, that is a certified translation. If you need to be understood in a conversation, a hearing, an appointment or a meeting, that is interpretation. Plenty of cases need both, and they are quoted separately.

In person, by phone or on video

Our interpreters work in all three formats, and which one fits is usually decided by the setting rather than by preference. Remote interpretation over the phone or on a video call is quicker to arrange and costs less, and it suits appointments, calls and meetings. In-person interpretation is what venues with their own rules tend to expect, and it is the right choice when documents are being signed or when several people are speaking at once.

The way an interpreter works also changes with the setting. In consecutive interpretation the speaker pauses and the interpreter renders what was said, which suits interviews and appointments. In simultaneous interpretation the interpreter speaks while the speaker continues, which suits conferences and long proceedings. Sight interpretation is reading a document aloud in the other language, which comes up constantly at signings. Tell us the setting and we will tell you which one it calls for.

Check what your venue allows before you book

This is the part worth knowing before you spend anything. Some venues supply the interpreter themselves and will not let you bring one: immigration court provides interpreters for its proceedings. Some courts require an interpreter drawn from their own approved roster. Hospitals frequently have language services of their own, at no cost to the patient.

So ask the office, clerk or clinic what they allow before booking anyone. If they provide the interpreter, you have saved the cost. If they expect you to bring one, ask whether they require any particular credential, and tell us the answer when you ask for a quote.

Why there is no price on this page

Certified translation has a flat price because a page is a page. Interpretation is booked by time and place, so the cost depends on the language, how long the assignment runs, whether it is remote or in person, where it is, and how much notice there is. Any number published here would be wrong for most of the people reading it.

To get an accurate estimate in one exchange, tell us: the languages, the date, time and expected duration, whether it is in person or remote and on which platform, where it is if in person, the subject matter, how many people need interpreting for, and whether the venue requires a particular credential. If documents are involved as well, send those and we will quote the certified translation alongside.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between interpretation and translation?

Interpretation is spoken and live; translation is written and prepared in advance. If you were asked for a document with a signed certification attached, you need a certified translation. If you need to be understood in a conversation, you need an interpreter. Many situations need both, and they are quoted separately.

How much does an interpreter cost?

It is quoted per assignment, because interpretation is priced by time and place rather than by page. The language, the duration, whether it is remote or in person, the location and how much notice there is all change the figure. Contact us with those details and you will get an estimate back.

Can you interpret at my hearing or my immigration interview?

Check with the venue first. Immigration court provides interpreters for its own proceedings, some courts require an interpreter from their approved roster, and many hospitals provide language services at no cost. If the venue expects you to bring your own, ask whether they require a specific credential and tell us when you request a quote.

Do I also need my documents translated?

Usually, if an office has asked for them. An interpreter makes a conversation possible; the paperwork in the file still has to be in English with a certification attached. Send the documents with your interpretation request and both get quoted together.

What do you need from me to quote an assignment?

The languages, the date and time, the expected duration, whether it is in person or remote and on which platform, the location if in person, the subject matter, how many people need interpreting for, and any credential the venue requires. The more of that comes in the first message, the fewer exchanges before you have a price.
