The certificate, its supplement, and the NMT
Ukrainian secondary school ends with a certificate of complete general secondary education. Until 2019 it was called the атестат про повну загальну середню освіту; a Cabinet of Ministers resolution that year renamed it свідоцтво про здобуття повної загальної середньої освіти, so siblings can hold differently titled versions of the same thing. The marks are not on the certificate but on its supplement (додаток), which lists every subject with its final grade. A US school or evaluator needs both, and each is translated in full with its seal and registration number.
University admission in Ukraine runs on an external test rather than on the certificate. Until 2021 that was the external independent evaluation (ЗНО, ZNO); since 2022 it has been the National Multi-subject Test (НМТ, NMT). Both are run by the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment and scored from 100 to 200, and results come as an online information card or certificate, or a signed extract for institutions abroad. These are separate documents and are translated only if the receiving office asks for them.
Twelve-point grades, kept as printed
Ukrainian schools mark on a 12-point scale, where 10 to 12 is the high level and 1 to 3 the initial level; certificates from before the early 2000s use the Soviet five-point scale, and older ones are often in Russian. The translation reproduces the marks and their scale. Turning a 9 into a US letter grade is credential evaluation, done by WES or ECE, and WES asks for the certificate to be verified through ENIC Ukraine first.
The usual US uses are enrolling a teenager in school (see school enrollment), community college admission and proof of secondary completion for training or work. Names follow your passport, which matters when an older document gives the Russian form of a Ukrainian name. See the Ukrainian transcript and birth certificate pages and our Ukrainian page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
Frequently asked questions
My document says атестат, not свідоцтво.
It is the same certificate under its pre-2019 name. We translate the title exactly as printed.
Do I need the supplement (додаток)?
Almost always. The certificate shows you finished; the supplement carries the subjects and grades a school or evaluator reads.
Should I include my NMT or ZNO results?
Only if the school asks for them. They are a separate document, and if you send them we translate them too.
