Ukraine moved to IBAN in 2019
Ukraine replaced its domestic account numbering with IBAN beginning UA in 2019, so documents from before and after show completely different account identifiers for the same account.
A US reader comparing a 2017 statement with a 2023 one sees two different numbers and suspects two accounts. It is one account under two numbering systems, and we say so.
Wartime currency controls are visible on the statement
Since 2022 Ukraine has operated currency controls limiting foreign currency purchase, cash withdrawal abroad and card spending outside the country, with the limits changing over time.
So a Ukrainian statement shows patterns that reflect regulation rather than choice — capped foreign withdrawals, hryvnia balances that could not be converted. A reader assessing means should see that, and we translate the transaction descriptions rather than leaving codes.
The hryvnia, and Diia
Statements are in hryvnia unless the header says otherwise, and Ukrainian numbers write a comma as the decimal separator. Many Ukrainians also hold dollar and euro accounts.
Ukraine has built extensive digital government services through Diia, and bank documents obtained through it carry electronic signatures and verification data rather than a wet stamp. We describe the electronic signature as what it is.
The certificate, and the patronymic
Banks issue a довідка — a certificate of account and balance on letterhead — which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements.
The holder is named with a patronymic from the father's given name, which is not a middle name, and Ukraine's 2010 transliteration means the Latin spelling may differ from an older document. See our Ukrainian page.
